Reduced freight rates on S F & N branch in Washington
The state Public Service Commission ordered large cuts in freight tariffs for the Spokane Falls & Northern branch of the Great Northern. Effective January 11, 1912, and clarified in an Olympia letter, the new tariffs supersede prior schedules with a 30 percent regional discrimination against Colville. The commission authorized publication of tariffs with the February 13 effective date, and the changes include substantial reductions from Spokane to Deer Park Loon Lake Springdale Valley Chewelah Colville Marcus Newport Boundary and scaled first class rates from Spokane to Washington points up to 200 miles. The notices imply formal protest and anticipated court appeal by the railroads.
