Colville Valley Lumber Co to Open Local Plant

Colville Valley Lumber Co organized with 30000 paid capital to establish a lumber finishing and manufacturing plant north of the Great Northern depot Colville. Officers include President George M Barline Spokane and J C Barline secretary Jerome C Barline. Plant will employ about 35 workers initially with extensive woods and transport work supporting over 300 in the region.

Boy Dies From Freezing After Nighttime Kidnapping Near Fruitland

Sheriff W H Graham and Deputy Frank Ham were ill with flu when Irvin Bailey aged 3, son of Mr and Mrs Chas Bailey, vanished from a farm near Fruitland. Investigators found the child’s body after a trace in crusted snow showed he crawled through a window to the porch. The boy was barefoot in night clothes and the early morning temperature was 20 degrees below zero.

Influenza Widespread Plaguing Stevens County Residents

After a fifteen day surge the influenza outbreak nears its crest in Stevens County. Hospitals fill as relapses from untreated cases increase hospital loads. Schools close, nurses and Red Cross workers struggle to meet demand while officials urge rest, hygiene, and early medical care to prevent pneumonia and further deaths.

Potato Growers Plan Nine February Meetings in Stevens County

County circular from Agricultural Agent Henry J. Plumb calls farmers to nine February meetings in Stevens County to discuss market conditions and set an objective for the 1920 potato crop. Speakers note seed scarcity in irrigated districts and urge centralized seed production to stabilize prices. Colville meeting on Saturday Feb 28 will form a county association with nine district representatives and E Grubb as chairman.

No Squirrel District This Year in Stevens County

Henry J. Plumb county agent says a proposed countywide squirrel pest district has been put aside by the board awaiting Spokane county case resolutions. Spring poisoning will proceed with farmers supplying poison and the agent aiding in procurement and pricing. Government formula used. mixture strengthened to one part poison per eight parts oats. Oats must be clean and plump. agent offers mixed or unmixed strychnine with special application. Mixing meetings to be held as last year with advance notice.
