Colville Soldier Receives U S Cross for Heroic Actions
Corporal Ray Walston of Colville, son of Mrs. Belle Walston, earned the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism near Gesnes France on September 29 and October 3. He repeatedly carried messages through shell and machine gun fire with the 361st Infantry. Walston was wounded in action and later told his mother from a hospital his hip was sore but he was fine. He turns 26 February 27 and left Colville for Camp Lewis September 9 1917, overseas early July.
