Democratic Platform Urges Tariff Reform and Trust Controls
The 1908 Washington Democratic platform denounces the 1897 tariff, calls for a nonpartisan tariff commission, free lists for essentials, high duties on luxuries, and production-based duties. It urges trust regulation, railroad rate oversight, bank guarantees, emergency currency, postal savings, graduated tax, direct senatorial elections, river improvements, and a prohibition on liquor. It also supports eight-hour work for miners, eight hours for women, employer liability laws, and state land and school funding safeguards.
