Clayton Fire Devastates Town in Claytons Ruined Business District
The town of Clayton suffered extensive losses after a 5:30 Tuesday morning fire. The Washington Brick and Lime Company plant and bunkhouse burned, along with the mercantile store, depot, and several residences. Losses reach around $100,000 with the brick plant insured for roughly $50,000 to $60,000. The fire left the town without protection or communication, but the brick plant plans to rebuild within 60 days in a fireproof facility. The lumber yards and other businesses were destroyed while the residents preserved the rest of the town.
