Joe Stobo announces spring, bicycle contest updates and evolving positions. Seward Brothers plan private sale to retire April 4. Prices for butter eggs wheat and corn cited as among the lowest in years. Local crime case of Counts murder verdicts sentenced to life. Public meeting next Monday aims to plan for G A R state encampment.
The Ballots and prize wheel will be published daily. Entries must reach this office by five o clock for counting the current day. Ballots received after five will be counted the following day.
Owners of threshing machines in Shelby county held a meeting last Saturday to regulate prices for threshing wheat, clover, barley and oats. They say current rates are insufficient to cover costs and propose a higher rate. Present rates are wheat three cents per bushel, clover 50 to 60 cents, oats 2½ cents, barley 24 cents. There are seventy five threshing outfits and forty eight clover hullers in the county.
The Columbus Star reports votes for the most popular lady in the city up to 5 PM March 20 1897 and notes daily tallies thereafter. The page lists local ads for Walton cabinets Kinney's delicacies and a laundry shown at 527 Washington St. It also records complaints filed by John Conrad against Ortie Herrod Frank Herrod and Lee Herrod for assault profanity and related matters.
Peter Wendell, once very ill, shows improvement. John E. Sharp plans a move to Indianapolis soon. Kinney's lunchroom serves warm lunches and oysters in every style at Birts old stand. Mrs. Vigel returns home from Cincinnati after months there. Rev. Percy Kendall lectured before the Christian Endeavor society in Chartlettsville last night. City Steam Laundry advertises high standards and invites a trial. Lower Bros. 1291f Thornton Bright relocates his family to the county edge to farm with his father in law. C A Smith of Orinoco adds a bloodhound, now four in total, larger and more savage than the others.
John George will move his office to the corner of Fifth and Washington streets within a day or two after purchasing the stock of bicycles from Ferris. He will operate the bicycle business alongside his coal and ice venture, and is described as a hustler who will liven up the trade and is expected to succeed.
A lunch room announces it will remain open through the night offering warm lunches at very reasonable prices to patrons seeking late meals.
Rev. B. V. Wilson, Africa native and Taylors University student in Upland Indiana, lectures tonight on Customs and Manners of his people. He will sing several selections in his native tongue. Report describes several weeks of youths trespassing on the roof of the Cerealine mill, performing dangerous stunts that alarm residents. Despite repeated warnings, the boys continue the perilous behavior, risking serious injury to themselves and prompting concern from nearby mothers.
Yesterday morning at 10:40 the northbound train stopped at the station. A crowd of men desperate for the Cincinnati Enquirer pressed the newsboy, nearly causing a panic as local agents Mutz & Lynch failed to supply papers. A growing business reports Brooks Brothers sold eighteen incubators this season with several addi tional Grooders. Over 40 incubators are in use in the county and incoming orders exceed capacity. Letters from prominent chicken raisers praise the incubators highly. The note hints at future large scale manufacture in the city. Kinney's all night lunch room is described as neat and clean.
F Victor Lynch appeared in court yesterday morning seeking a privately hired attorney. Judge Herd suggested the county typically hires lawyers for paupers, prompting Lynch to protest that he is not a pauper. He was returned to his cell and given a few days to arrange counsel.

The congregation of Wall-street Methodist Church in Jeffersonville gathered for a sermon by Rev Charles Tinsley when word of an approaching cyclone arrived. He halted the sermon at once and dismissed the services, causing a panic as worshippers hurried from the building.

Mrs E E Proctor and son Master Walter of Indianapolis visit Mr and Mrs James H Washington. John Gent, formerly in milling here, now with a Chicago iron firm, visits his family.
A horse belonging to Mr Wolf a German farmer near the Two mile House left hitched in front of Ben Salingers old stand became des couraged with life and lay down in the shafts yesterday. By bystanders help it was raised without anyone being harmed. The horse is in good health with no damage done.
Charles Carson and Miss Eliza Cain of near Elizabethtown wed at the bride’s home with Rev. F H Tormohlen officiating in his first such ceremony. The event was described as a complete success.
Ricumont March 23 reports the failure of National Life Maturity Insurance in Washington with the building and loan department now in receivership. Richmond stockholders paid in about 7 to 10 thousand dollars, with local holdings near 11.5 thousand including a grocery man, a shoe merchant, and a school teacher. The note cautions citizens about the risk and compares to Columbus association losses.
Will Wood, a cousin of Pearl Bryan beheaded in Kentucky, was found in Norfolk Virginia on March 22. He had enlisted as a landsman aboard the United States ship Richmond in Philadelphia and was later moved to the gun boat Castine for a South Atlantic voyage. He faces possible prosecution for sending forbidden matter by mail, but navy action may prevent his return to civil law.
