About fifty workers at W. W. Mooney & Sons, the world’s largest tannery, walked out after a 10 percent wage cut was posted. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company absorbs the United States Industrial Insurance Company of Newark New Jersey. The deal adds 36 superintendents 114 assistant superintendents and 6511 agents across New Jersey New York Iowa Pennsylvania and Delaware with the Industrial portfolio valued over 14 million dollars and more than 120000 policies. The move vaults Metropolitan to first in American industrial life insurance, surpassing Prudential John Hancock and others. It echoes a 1893 consolidation of People’s Industrial Insurance in Norwich.
