Albert Koconrek, a July graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, was elected class poet and delivered an original ode. The verse traverses themes from ancient legends to fairy realms, invoking Thebes, Troy, Perseus, Bellerophon, and Pan, contrasting heroic memory with dreamy landscapes as the present fades toward night.
The storm heavily damaged the home of Henry Cline and blew away George Stevenson’s veranda. Matt Snively and Cornelius Hoss suffered losses, Ok Rev Darling noted prayers, and several structures including Orinoco Furniture Factory and Allen Farmer’s mill faced substantial damage. Glanton’s Furniture Factory also suffered.

Yesterday morning's issue misnamed Jack Shields. the correct name is Will Shields who works at Brinkley Furniture Co. Mr. Shields’ hand injury is not serious but painful. Louisville hosted South and Central American trade delegates as Senator Turpie denounced the Tariff Bill as nearly criminal to conduct trade with Southern republics. Several affidavits target saloon keepers with cases set for July 7.
Street steerers press men and women for marriage licenses in Jeffersonville as a man named William Batch from Floyd County denounces the practice seen as Hoosier Gretna Green. The incident sparks anger and a heated exchange on Spring Street amid worries over runaway marriages in the city. A masked toll-house robbery near Nicholasville is also reported, with the keeper’s wife threatened with a revolver during the theft.
Benjamin Musgrave, a noted convict, lies dying of consumption in Michigan City after a plan to swindle insurance firms. His accomplices Ben Trout and Ann Burton were arrested. a skeletal remains thought to be Musgrave’s was found near Terre Haute. Skeleton brought from St Louis. sentence due November 1898. Case of Dan Curry postponed in Williamsburg Kentucky. Traveling fund raises $2000 for prosecution.
Columbus Red Stockings played Franklin Juniors in Franklin with a good crowd watching. The score favored Franklin 15 to 11 after 9 innings, with Kocher Bristen Hille Boone Wetzel Polen and others in the lineup. The game follows a prior June 23 meeting when Columbus beat Franklin.
Miss Cora Ellison has accepted a position with W. Daugherty and Co as a stenographer and typist.
The association met in executive session at the old Normal building and elected officers for the ensuing six months. President G W Knight, Vice President Joe Rice, Financial Secretary Elmer Bailey, Recording Secretary Ira Giltner, Treasurer Charles Whipker, and Trustee Samuel Schaffner for eighteen months.
Our candidate for congress Major Charles W. Lee met many republicans in Brownstown yesterday and is touring the district to become better acquainted. He plans another visit before August 10 as he seeks election in the fourth district. Augustus Miller of Nortonsburg also appeared in the city yesterday.
Ed Spencer of the Salvation Army faced arrest and a judge’s ruling after the Sweet Ireland disturbance. He was found guilty of earning concealed weapons and fined $11, then sent to jail for eleven days for lack of payment. Lawrence Allen also fined $11 for assault. his fine was stayed. Peace is restored.
