The Foreign Relations Committee agreed to report Senator Cameron’s joint resolution recognizing Cuba’s independence. Secretary Olney urged delaying action and noted there is no stable Cuban government. the panel voted to report the measure to the Senate, with holidays delaying final action.
The famed magician Herrmann collapsed and died of heart disease today in his private carriage near Salamanca on route to Bradford. The announcer said his remains would be sent to New York. He had just finished an engagement at the Lycum Theater and was honored by the Genesee Valley Club.
United States Marshal Jo Shelby announced that all persons within the jurisdiction aiding Cuban insurgents against U S treaty law will be arrested. D 8 Harriman said no actions would conflict with national loyalty. About 150 Texas Rangers under Temple Huston are ready to deploy to Cuba at a moment’s notice.
United Consul Gergholt reports to the State Department that about 50,000 Armenian children under twelve were made orphans by the 1895 massacres in Erzerum. The note mentions international efforts on orphan care, including missions, charities, and proposed settlements for widows and children.
John F. Miller inpranapolis Isp announces his private car will transport William McKinley to Washington for his presidential inauguration. Miller, general superintendent of the Pennsylvania lines west of Pittsburg, will accompany the president elect. The car is undergoing a general overhaul. McKinley previously rode with Miller when governor of Ohio and praised the arrangement.
In Dayton Ohio on December 19 in the Frantz murder trial Dr J A and Fred Weaver and Dr Claude Christian testified they examined the body of Bessie Little twice. The first as death by self act and after exhumation found two bullet portions in the skull fired from shore through the right. The shots would have killed the girl.
Newport Ky December 17 Postmaster J J Hetsch is missing from his office and his bondsman brother has taken his place. Inspectors have examined the books finding a deficit of nearly $6000. Authorities cite Hetsch as a trusted official who allegedly engaged in heavy gambling. He was appointed three years ago.
In Curcaco on December 18 Mrs Jennie Cohen fought off would be robber John Sheehan with a hatchet striking him on the head. Barnett Cooper was wounded by a missed bullet during the attempted theft, with a crowd restraining the attacker Patrick Cogley fled.
A meeting in this city delegates pledged to take up arms for the Cabanaymipathizere cause. About fifty men signed to support the effort with written commitments.
