August Hill filed a divorce suit yesterday through attorney Charles Hamblem against his wife Mattie alleging cruel treatment. The couple married only a year or two.
An early alarm from Box 14 sent the department to the rear of Hughes grocery where a pile of empty barrels and packing boxes caught fire. Firemen quickly controlled the blaze using two hoses. The fire spread to sheds and outbuildings behind the store. Damage estimated at about $100. neighbor merchants urged safer stacking to prevent a larger disaster.
The event attracted large attendance and festive crowds enjoying a day of entertainment and celebration. Spectators filled the stands and streets, marking a rare perfect day in sports and community merriment.
Congressman Overstreet gives up remaining travel to Europe this year for urgent duties and will stay in the country. He arrived in Indianapolis this morning for several days. Clarelate advertised cooling at Stahlhuth's fountain.
Dr. W. G. Smith and his wife have located in this city and will reside at the corner of Fourth and Brown Streets. The note expresses welcome and good wishes for their new home and friends.
The Y M C A Ladies Auxilliary held a lawn fete on Central School lawn with weed free greens, Japanese lanterns, tables, and cream served. The event drew good attendance and may be repeated by the same group soon. Jessie Graham died yesterday afternoon at home from spinal trouble.
Across the city serious illnesses are reported. Mrs. Ben Patterson of North Pearl Street with material fever is not improving. Mrs. Vincent Browning, also with material fever, shows no improvement. Charles Beatty of Mooneys tannery is confined by sickness. Ray Blocher of Sycamore Street is home with illness. Mrs. George Knight suffers nervous prostration but can be up.
A Wednesday crowd of young society people from Columbus visited Weed Patch hill for a day of delight. Attendees included Misses Anna Coup May McCormack Kate McCormack and Messrs Albert Schwartzkopf Dr Moore. Diphtheria reappeared in the county with cases east and west of the city. a small child died yesterday on Henry Marr's farm southeast of town.
A social party is held tonight with games and other amusements anticipated to provide a delightful time for attendees.
A local poem lauds Columbus city band led by Prof. Arthur Mason, praising its music as sweet and simple yet rich. It notes fifteen soldiers departed this morning with listed names, mentions election results, and warns fiduciaries to pay accrued taxes before final settlement, with a ten percent penalty for noncompliance.
