A crowded Crump's last night saw Shanty Town attract one of the season’s best houses though reviews were mixed with some strong individual performances. Tom Nawn, Dick McAvoy, Alice McAvoy and Bob Evans received praise for their roles amid long intermissions and a dry mood.
A sizable crowd gathered at City Hall for a G A R meeting with remarks by Dept Commander James S Dodge and several local figures from the Sons of Veterans Women's Relief Corps and Ladies Aid Society. The event noted past reformatory leadership and plans for an upcoming encampment with entertainment and moral instruction for inmates.
Commissioners failed to reach a contract as all bids for new gravel roads were too high. Bids are readvertised through the Weekly Star with opening scheduled for November 27. Also noted is news of a Brownstown area death and a local operatic club forming to perform Pirates of Penzance for a G A R encampment fund with officers named.
Brown County items report Benjamin Petro undergoing treatment in Columbus and Annie Lang visiting relatives in Jonesville. James Rogers buys land near Bloomington and plans a cottage with family moving next spring for city access.
Mrs. Charles Griffith traveled to Edinburg this morning. Mrs. J. M. Lindley spent the day in Indianapolis. F D Moore of Shelbyville is in the city. Miss Myrtle Wisner returns from Indianapolis this evening. Miss Emma Lancester of Shelbyville visits Mrs. John Hughes. Mr and Mrs M G Robertson and son of Kendallville have left for Indianapolis after visiting here. Mrs. Tom Brown, Mrs. Ed Moore and Miss Cora Bell travel to Indianapolis for a two week visit with Jonas Brinkley and family. Oscar Feigenbaum goes to Indianapolis. Mrs. H L Rost and daughter Florence spend the day with friends in Edinburg. Mrs. Chas Pruitt goes to Indianapolis for the day. Alexander Duncan and daughter Miss Ella go to Bedford to spend the winter with Dr Younger and wife. Ella will return soon.
Former President Cleveland told an Associated Press representative that he and Mrs Cleveland greatly appreciate the many congratulations on the birth of their son and asked the AP to convey thanks.
Bertha Taylor three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Taylor of Taylorsville died this morning from diphtheria. Burial held this afternoon at Lawton cemetery.
Rev. James Reeger of Wellsville Ohio preached last night in Petersville to a full house. He once served the local church for twenty years and counts Hartsville friends among attendees. He arrived in the city with Thomas Redman. Phillip Coons of Martinsville, formerly from this city, has returned home to visit his brother Ben in Mt Healthy. The brother in poor health is estimated to weigh not more than sixty pounds.
Fire ruined the residence and implement shop of John M. Biliheimer in Blountsville on Tuesday night, causing a loss of several thousand dollars with no insurance. Fire officials investigated the blaze.
The Cincinnati jury found Duke Croxon guilty of abducting a woman from her husband at Newport Kentucky and brutally outraging her. He was sentenced to twenty years in the penitentiary though Kentucky law allowed the death penalty.
Fair and warm Saturday. Quarterly examination will occupy jubilee schools next week. Examinations begin in High school this afternoon.
Elihu 2B Spencer presents Julius Caesar next Wednesday evening with scenery and a strong company. Principal players include Isabel Pengta Cecilia Griffith Ruth Reach Myra Lee Civalier John Doud George Macomber Cassius Quinby James Harrison Robert Smiley George Sylvester George Holt David Kimball and David Ward. Cassius praised as a signature Spencer characterization rivaling older actors. The play is noted for absorbing interest and lofty tone.
Nellie James died after days of suffering at the Caldwell home in Exchange county. The mare, nearly forty, bore Jesse James branded initials on both shoulders with a bullet mark on the left hip. Robert Cole recalled Nellie as the horse Jesse rode when he was fired upon, a tale tied to a deadly pursuit. The piece ends with an unrelated shoe store advertisement.
