President McKinley’s hands supported by both houses as the emergency appropriation bill for national defense sails through the Senate and House with unanimous votes. The measure provides $5,000,000 for defense and $183,000 in deficiencies, and the president signs for $50,183,000 total defense funding. The vote was dramatic in its speed, with 12 minutes from report to passage and no debate.
The Republican county slate lists precinct officials by township with names for Columbus Clay Flat Rock Hawcreek Clifty Rockcreek Sandcreek Wayne Jackson Nineveh and others. An executive committee names members including John L. Jones S W Norton Gustavus Miller Jeff Huffman and Herman Aldenhagen with advisory figures Barney McEvenne and others.

Destruction of the battleship Maine led the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company to pay three claims under policies held by Maine crew members. All three claims were promptly paid. D. R. Merritt, an officer who perished, held a $7,000 policy with New York Life.

Leroyle’s Hutchinson Hopper called a master piece and likely long remembered in stage history. Crump's Washington street railway rails have been ordered but have not yet arrived.
