Navy actions off Santiago capture vessels and alarms rise

Fire destroys barn. hay and tools worth 250 reported

Early morning blaze at Brown William Deckard’s Owl Creek barn damages about 1000 pounds of hay a barrel of machine oil a new saddle and wagon springs. Deckard saw flames from the hay mow and suspects matches caused the fire with a loss of about 250 dollars.

Republican convention opens with John W Morgan chosen chairman

The county Republican convention convened at 10 30 with John L Jones nominated as permanent chair and Hon John W Morgan elected by acclamation. Morgan lauded Republicans and McKinley while critiquing Democrats and the silver issue. Committees on resolutions and rules were appointed and adjourned to 1 pm.
