Special from Santiago reports yesterday’s bombardment confirmed. American warships patrol the harbor entrance while insurgents assemble on surrounding hills. Spaniards bolster harbor defenses as tense developments loom hourly.
Dispatches from Santiago de Cuba say the Spanish cruiser Cristobal Colon faced heavy fire as the American squadron approached the harbor. Reports claim two shells hit the Iowa while the bombardment involved thirteen ships including the Brooklyn Iowa Massachusetts Texas Amazonas and Columbia. The American fleet left at 4 pm and fired signals with Cuban troops nearby as tension rose near Mule St Nicholas amid warnings of grave events.
