In an interview to be published by the Times, Secretary Gage expresses optimism about 1898. The Democratic county central committee met Saturday at the courthouse to nominate county candidates by delegate convention in Columbus on Saturday Feb 12, with one delegate for each 10 votes for William J Bryan and fractions over five making 312 delegates. The indictments against Jennings County Commissioner Beaty and Vernon Bank cashier John Morris drew attention as a special grand jury was convened after Morris’s preliminary ruling. The case, slated for Judge New, could bring further charges against others in the area. The State Central Committee calls the Bartholomew County Republican central committee members to a special meeting at the Columbus courthouse on Saturday January 8th 1898 at 1 30 pm. Miss Emma Payne of Indianapolis is guest of the Misses Woody. Lonnie Cox returned from Brown County. E S Collier returned to Oberlin College after holidays with his parents James Collier and wife of Burnsville. Mrs Hamaker of Terra Haute visits G J Erwin of Maple Grove. Conductor Hull of the Cambridge City line returns to his run after a two weeks vacation.
Walter Vail of Michigan City has been named to the prison directors board by Governor Mount. He has lived in the city for 25 years, organized the First National Bank and has served as its president. Vail was elected mayor in 1895 and is a past grand commander of the Knights Templar. The appointment surprised him as he did not seek the post.
A local notice warns residents about unscrupulous persons falsely claiming feed rails will fail to run and assures that operations will proceed as usual.
