In Hagerstown Maryland on December 27 a brick warehouse owned by Cheeseman and Co burned. One thousand two hundred bushels of wheat and 560 dollars worth of live poultry owned by Dr. W Harris were consumed. Cheeseman and Co suffered a thousand dollars in damage with five hundred dollars of insurance. Dr Harris was not insured.
The Pennsylvania railroad shows gains in gross earnings and net income for November and the first eleven months of 1897 versus 1896. Directly operated lines report a November gross earnings rise of 572 500 and net November earnings up 164 400, with eleven months up 1 701 000 and 2 302 100 respectively. West of Fence and Erie gains include November increases of 918 900 in gross and 594 900 in net, with eleven months up 185 500 and 567 300.

Seven people including George Curtis Levi Hamelidler and William Tirtel were jailed in Nashville on arson charges for burning John Patterson's farm near Brownstown. Mrs Anna Jenkins of Jackson County near Brownstown died after being found unconscious on the road. The death is believed caused by internal injuries from the incident.
