In the Lykens valley region a split grows between union and nonunion miners amid a Williamstown strike defiance. Sheriff Reid sworn in 130 deputies as leaders warn of possible clashes with Williamstown workers.
On September 19 the Wyoming valley strike shows mixed gains with some washeries operating and United Mine Workers expanding membership. The West End colliery at Mocanaqua worked full Tuesday, while most big mines stayed idle. A Sugar Notch rally led by President Nicholls drew union and nonunion supporters into clashes before many joined the union. Dozens of officers were sworn to protect company property as coal shipments halt, leaving about 1,500 railroad workers unemployed.
