Gossip surrounding Frances Pride centers on the grand Exposition in Paris. Reporters note social intrigue, fashion and rumors about attendees, performances, and possible connections to prominent figures across European circles.
Paris celebrates the Exposition with Eiffel Tower and central dome lit, 15,000 mounted troops and bands parade from the Trocadero to the gardens. Exhibitors total 39,000 with many nations represented, Germany absent. American display features machinery and Edison apparatus. overall area exceeds 3.6 square kilometers. the tower rises to nearly 1,000 feet offering scientific observatories and public ascent facilities.
At about 1 50 am the dwelling of Watson Bownes in Westoneston Williamsport burned to the ground. Five people died including two children two servants and an elderly woman. Bownes and his wife were rescued but seriously burned. Kate Dunn and sister Annie also perished in the flames.
Illinois House debates McClanahan measure to curb intemperance and crime. A motion to strike the enacting clause failed 60 to 25, sending the bill to a people’s vote next October for approval and potential state wide prohibition starting May. The St Vincent Orphan asylum three miles east of Vincennes Indiana burned Monday causing a loss of 35000. The fire started from a defective stove and was quickly controlled. About 10 orphans were housed there all escaped. Sister Dridcot was severely burned but escaped death and the institution will be rebuilt at once.
A freight train of the Chesapeake and Ohio road transporting the Libby prison relic from Richmond to Chicago wrecked seven miles east of Maysville Kentucky. An ash from a car broke causing the crash and the ruins were scattered. Crowds gathered all day to collect bricks and lumber as keepsakes. no injuries were reported.
May 4 report from Washington states General Sheridan’s monument at Armington Cemetery nears completion and will be ready for Decoration Day. It features two simple granite monoliths with a three sided base and a video- style tower. The design aims to memorialize Sheridan with two headquarters and a mounted figure.
