London reports Lord Roberts has sent 16 000 troops to Glenn ten miles north of Bloemfontein on the railway. Stores are piled up and the advance to Kroonstad 135 miles away is planned with garrisons in key Free State towns. General French reports Commandant Oliver with 6000 men north of Ladybrand as operations begin.
London report from the Bloemfontein correspondent says Commandant Grobelaar’s 6,000 men fled north along the Basuto border due to poor roads and horses. The note adds 40,000 Boers under arms with 10,000 near the Natal border and 20,000 at Kroonstad, while rail delays hinder supplies.
Warrenton reports Boer artillery and rifle fire on a British camp today. The first shell hit during breakfast as fusiliers ate. Bullets struck the village and a Red Cross hospital hotel was hit. The assault was large yet only one Briton was wounded.
Bloemfontein report: 1st Coldstreams and 3d Grenadiers at Glen. Gordons and cavalry moved Sunday. 14th brigade followed. Three span bridge dynamited hours before guards approach, delaying advance. Gatacre forces now arriving. Pretoria report: Gen Joubert dies of peritonitis. funeral planned Thursday. mausoleum on his farm preferred. Gen Louis Rotha expected to succeed in Natal.
A Pretoria dispatch reports President Kruger will assume chief command of the Trans-yaal forces. British scouts have reconnoitered the Drankensberg passes where at most 2,000 Boers work on entrenchments, and a heavy bombardment of Mafeking occurred March 26 with a strong defensive response.
Melbourne dispatch reports the coasting steamer Glenelge foundered Sunday morning in a heavy gale off the Gypps land coast. Of 33 crew, only three were saved.
The Columbus and Wheeling express on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad crashed into a Chicago Junction freight train at Whiting Indiana, thirty miles from Chicago. Engineer Richard Reniman of Garrett Indiana was killed instantly, fireman George OConnell was severely bruised and internally injured but will recover. Conductor James Hotman led the outgoing train which left Chicago at seven. A large passenger turnout survived with no injuries as coaches stayed on rails.
Washington reports no contact from United States Consul Adelburt Hay regarding a visit to Kroonstad but indicates he may be establishing a consular agency in the Free State capital. The prior Bloemfontein representative, Alfred Eliott, was a British subject who left for safety. All territory falls under Pretoria's consular district.
Washington March 29 The retirement of Rear Adm Day will promote Capt Silas Terry a member of the naval retiring board to rear admiral Commander James H Dayton in charge of the San Juan naval station to be captain Lieutenant commander W H Turner to be commander and Lieutenant Albert Lleaves now at the Washington navy yard to be lieutenant commander.
Washington March 29 Lieut Commander Rose who sought retirement has received six months leave of absence. After this period his case will be reconsidered. Report says Rear Admiral Howell, senior in grade, is preparing to seek retirement and currently heads the naval examining board.
Chin Pom Ye, the Korean minister, called at the White House with Secretary Hay and presented his recall letter to the president. He is named minister to Russia France and Austria and will depart for his new post in a few days.
Admiral Dewey attended the grand banquet in St Augustine hosted by General Joseph M. Schofield. Afterward the guests moved to a garden party in the Alcazar courtyard, illuminated in brilliant lights.
Danville Quebec reports the death at age 73 of Maj. Gen. Thomas L Mountain retired. He served in the Indian mutiny and on his staff was Gen Sir George White who defended Ladysmith.
New York on March 29 reports Arbuckle Bros. announced a five point cut in their sugar price list from top to bottom. Other refiners refused to match the reduction by Arbuckle Bros. at least openly.
The senate did not confirm Hon. W. D. Bynum as general appraiser of the port of New York due to lack of a quorum after lengthy debate.
In Ie Pennsylvania on March 29 eleven dryers in a paper machine at the H.F. Watson Co. mill exploded destroying the area housing the machines. One man, Jacob Stahl, was killed and four others were injured.
Jacksonville police arrest Geo. W. Clark of Macon Georgia on a Perry Loan and Savings Company safe cracking case. He is charged with blowing open the Perry Georgia bank vault and stealing more than $4,000 during a prior incident.
Oshkosh March 29 ex U S Senator Philetus Sawyer is seriously ill at 84. The veteran politician, once a Wisconsin senator, remains under medical care and is described as in a grave condition by doctors.
Frankfort Kentucky March 29 there are no new arrests in the assassination case though rumors persist. Attorneys for H E Youtsey will seek an immediate examining trial while Capt John Davis remains jailed and efforts by friends to secure his release continue.
In Santiago de Cuba on March 29 a large stock of plows hoes and farm implements was received for free distribution across the province and hundreds of applicants have already been supplied. Refugees aboard the schooner Herod from Puerto Rico say they seek work due to poor business at home. All able men are immediately employed by the mines.
Manila reports Admiral Watson aboard the Brooklyn departed for Hong Kong to transfer command to Admiral Reamey. Two gunboats sighted a steamer signaling with Cape Roweador lights, pursued, and the steamer escaped seaward in darkness. Washington notes Representative Robertson of Louisiana fell ill at the Capitol and was moved to his hotel with no serious results expected.
In Knoxville Tennessee on March 29 more than half of the 300 workers who walked out on Monday have returned. The mill is claimed to be operating at full capacity with non union labor replacing those still out.
Indiana officials join Missouri and Iowa appointees to meet with the fraternal congress committee. They aim to align uniform departmental requirements under the fraternal law proposed by Congress. The June conference will include John A. Johnson J W White and D D Aiken as part of the committee.
At a joint conference of miners and operators in Indiana the miners agree to bi monthly pay days while awaiting court rulings on the powder issue. Unions issue iron clad instructions to not concede beyond powder sold openly, signaling possible mine suspensions next Monday. Separately, Indiana Republican state committee meets in Indianapolis to discuss the April 25 26 convention with possible candidates including Harrison Mount Beveridge and Fairbanks.
In Indianapolis on Lincoln lane a fire destroyed a residence before discovery by the family. Emma Heinbach 17, dying from consumption, crawled to a window and collapsed on the ground. Her grandmother Ellen Meyer 80 years old, also very ill, barely escaped as the roof caved in. The family saved nothing.
In Warrick county Indiana 15 year old son of Richard W Martin near Newburg is badly hurt after a cockle burr flies into his mouth and lodges in his throat. He is rushed to Jevvansville where surgeons remove the burr and he nearly dies on the way.
In Indianapolis a March banquet hosted by the Commercial Club and Board of Trade saluted Hon. Hugh Hanna for leading the monetary movement and aiding currency bill passage. Ex-President Harrison presided over the event with two hundred prominent residents in attendance.
In Marion Indiana on March 2 a brawl at James Rowan's saloon near the soldiers’ home left Rowan shot in the left leg and Pat Gallagher stabbed in the chest. Rowan may be crippled and Gallagher in alarming condition. On March 29 at Selvin ten miles north of Boonville the flouring mills burned with four men badly burned by steam and fire. the boiler exploded and the mill was a total loss. the shingle factory also burned. In New Albany Indiana on March 29 John Kelly, Alexandria, attempted to board a switch engine. dragged by the tender, he suffered scalp wounds and bruises and was taken to the county infirmary. In Logansport March 29 Frank Bulger, a reputed crook who broke jail three years earlier on a house breaking charge, was arrested.
Greentown Indiana March 29 William Ellis a farmer was fatally hurt when he fell from an apple tree he was pruning. Three ribs on his right side were broken and he sustained internal injuries.
Elkhart Ind March 29 Coroner Eisenbeiss ruled that John Darnell of Goshen died from tuberculosis. Earlier reports had suggested possible poisoning.
General Wheeler reports Guam covers about 150 square miles with 9 000 residents mainly in towns. The fertile soil yields copra exports worth 75 dollars a ton, while the island’s climate includes heavy rainfall, monsoons, and rare hurricanes. Agana houses 6 400 inhabitants in a clean, well kept city.
An advance in coal prices for the Pittsburgh district will take effect April 1, agreed by coal producers and railroad river combines. Each coal grade rises about 20 percent, with nut and slack coal likely to rise more, possibly about 35 cents per ton above current prices.
