A quiet meeting in Lexington plans a nonpartisan effort to restore Kentucky’s reputation amid political strife. Delegates to a state convention will be chosen April 20 for a Louisville gathering on April 24 to discuss freeing the state from partisan disputes and potential political upheaval.
New York reports the gold statue of The American Girl, destined for the Paris exposition, has been cast. Miss Maude Adams served as the model with Mrs. Bessie Potter Van Nah as sculptor. The statue stands six feet tall, weighs 712 pounds, and uses $187,000 in bullion.

The house committee on pensions has practically decided to extend the January 5, 1898 pension act. The change would raise monthly pensions from eight to twelve dollars and apply to veterans enrolled from the act date as well as those pensioned before.
Rear Adm. George Remey will relieve Rear Adm. Watson of command on the Asiatic Station and travel from San Francisco to Manila around the first of next month. He will be accompanied by Rear Adm. Kempff, who commands a division assigned to Chinese waters, as the Pacific voyage proceeds. Kempff recently left Mare Island Yard and is now in San Francisco, with Remey succeeding at Portsmouth Port.
In Chicago J F P Allen of New Orleans bought 1,000,000 Paris exposition tickets at half price and plans to resell for profit while sending staff in uniform to Paris. Washington representative Lane introduces a bill to fund a St Louis 1903 exposition with a government building of 400,000 and 5,000,000 more after private funds reach 10,000,000.
Former heavyweight champion Peter Jackson sails from San Francisco on the steamer Mariposa bound for Australia hampered by ill health. He hopes climate change will restore his vigor and plans to open a boxing school in an Australian city, likely Sydney, if his health improves.
Chicago reports the death of Netherton Trail who died suddenly Wednesday in Manzanillo Colima Mexico while in charge of mining properties. He had recently returned from the north and suffered coast fever. Trail spent most of his life in Omaha Nebraska where he was well known and prominent. He was uncle to the late Bishop Clarkson, unmarried and survived by his mother and two sisters.
Chicago report states Robert W. Gilchrist, barber at 1764 22nd Street, was shot and killed instantly as he prepared to shove a patron in his shop. The assassin fired from the door, taking a slow aim and striking Gilchrist in the temple before witnesses could react.
More than 1,000 cavalry infantry and artillery recruits depart Ft. Schuyler and Ft. Slocum for Brooklyn to board Sumner bound for the Philippines. Immediately after, 600 raw recruits will report to Ft. Slocum for general training.
Former President Grover Cleveland arrives in Princeton after a two week Florida hunting and fishing excursion. He appears in very good health with an elastic step and easier walk than before. Mrs. Cleveland meets him at the station.
Beck Olsen of Copenhagen defeated Ernest Roeser in a heavyweight title bout. Each wrestler scored a fall, but Roeser failed to time out at the close of the second fall. In Paris the Intransigeant reports Filipino general Pava routed American forces near Cubat and seized the town.
London reports no significant shift in the South African conflict as Lord Roberts plans the next move. Gatacre and Brabant push through the Free State while Norval’s Pont bridge is rebuilt. Mafeking relief wait continues as British forces monitor Boer positions.
