Taylor held a long conference with Republican leaders in Frankfort and discussed a possible memorial to President McKinley seeking federal intervention and recognition as governor. John W. Yerkes denied any truth to the report and said he was not involved in such a message.
Lexington March 17. The Powers and Davis case returns before Police Judge Riley. Defense seeks rule citing lack of warrants. judge rules police chief not responsible. Grand jury to review records and may summon prisoners. Witnesses include Police Chief Ross, Capt. Ross, Detective Jenkins, plus two soldiers. Sheriff Bosworth in Frankfort, reportedly declined reward from Goebel. The case draws statewide interest.
The senate passed a Porto Rican bill authorizing 2,095,455 dollars of customs revenue collected on imports since October 18, 1898 to January 1, 1900 to be used by the Porto Rican government. Funds may support public education works and other governmental purposes as needed.
A four story tie structure on the west pier of the Allantree dock in Brooklyn was destroyed by fire. It was owned by an unidentified party and caused substantial damage to adjacent facilities. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night.
The Ellsworth Manufacturing Co. stored coffee rice and spices in a Brooklyn Wharf building. Losses totaled 104000 with 25000 in building damage and 79000 on contents. Washington March 17 Representative Fitzgerald of Massachusetts introduced a resolution alleging Standard Oil paid a 17 million extra dividend on March 15 1900 and that kerosene price increases in that period taxed households. It declares such action violates the Sherman anti trust law and calls on the attorney general to urge district attorneys to prosecute the company.
Secretary Hay and Lord Pauncefote signed protocols extending the ratification period for reciprocity treaties with Jamaica Turks and Caicos Bermuda and British Guiana. The new limit is within 12 months though action is still desired this session.
A gasoline explosion at the James Weaver residence in Columbus Ohio followed a gas flame attempt by George White. One child, Philip Weaver, 4, died. Five others were fatally injured and one seriously hurt. Injured were Joseph White Roy Weaver Alice Weaver Loray Tillie Weaver James Weaver. They were taken to Protestant hospital. The father may recover but chances are poor.

Mafeking remains tense as Kimberley relief forces advance and Gen. Hector MacDonald nears full recovery.
General Gataere arrives at Bethulie to find the town nearly deserted as Boers trek toward Dewet's corps after the occupation of Zeerfontein. The telegraph link to Springfontein remains open. Reports claim President Kruger annexed the Orange Free State to the South African Republic two days earlier.
Dispatches report entrenching on the Vaal river at Vereeniging as Boer morale collapses. Pretoria sources claim Generals Meyer and Botha have withdrawn to their farms while large numbers surrender at Bethulie and Springfontein.

Senate and House members introduce bills to replace US notes and small denominations with United States post check notes. The new notes would be payable to a named payee, include a space for a receipt and stamp, and be redeemable at a post office.
Treasury officials face heavy workload after passage of a new financial bill converting old long term bonds into low rate gold bonds. About 27 million dollars in exchange applications exist, mostly from national banks. State banks seek national status. 200 applications received with many favorable actions. Separately, the State Department reports a Persian minister to Washington after a decade vacancy, the prior envoy departed amid ridicule over his long name.
A German foreign office official states Germany does not claim control over Shantung and the United States may send a ship to Taku to protect American citizens. Other items note senate action on a New York port appraiser nomination, a murder trial docket in New London, and Webster Davis returning from Naples.
A 100 foot trestle near Macoupin Station five miles south of Carlinville Illinois caught fire from a train and 34 feet of the structure were destroyed.
In a private letter from Indianapolis March 17 Representative Overstreet predicts Congress will pass an anti-trust bill this session and aims for a constitutional, effective measure. He notes the judiciary committee will shape the bill and cautions against political buncombe.
Steve Owens, a notorious highway robber and housebreaker, was arrested as he stepped off the midnight train returning to Bedford. He faced a prior sentence with Wes Hilgen for highway robbery and had been released to return for sentencing within two days. An attempted murder during a house robbery is charged. Hilgen remains at large. Indianapolis will host the next national convention of factory inspectors in September with delegates from every state.
Five prisoners escaped from the county jail in Anderson Indiana. They cut bars in the third story window with a steel saw and climbed 30 feet to the ground. A woman connected to one inmate reportedly smuggled the saw into his cell.
William Tiday of Anderson fell from a Chicago and Southeastern train near Noblesville, breaking his neck. He was 50, from a destitute family, living in Anderson.
In Logansport Indiana on March 17 Perry Rife died after a falling limb struck his skull. The incident occurred as he was outdoors and medical officials report a fatal outcome anticipated.
The Chattanooga report from March 17 states that fruit growers across eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia fear severe damage from a powerful cold wave. The message warns growers of anticipated crop losses and potential economic impact in the region.

Gov Taylor reportedly prepared a statement for a second appeal to President Meliiley. Over 6000 men and boys idle at Shamokin Pennsylvania due to heavy snows.
Cincinnati and Chicago trading floors report mixed commodity prices. Flour ranges from 2.05 to 3.90 per unit with varieties including spring, winter, and patent, while grain shows No 2 red wheat around 73 cents and oats around 25 to 34 cents. Live stock prices list hogs from 4.25 to 5.05, cattle from 3.40 to 5.05, and lambs from 5.75 to 7.35 with veal calves priced up to 8.75.
