Death of Illinois House Speaker Miller in Colorado

Dispatch from Toulon Illinois reports Hon James A Miller Speaker of the Illinois House died at Manitou Colorado on a Friday after an illness. He left Chicago June 19 and hoped to return for the special session next month. Governor Fifer informed and a possible special election predicted to fill the vacancy.

Two Kentuckians Jump From Charleston Bridge

June 29 Joseph Russell of Ludlow Kentucky and Jack Tyrrell of Greenville Kentucky leaped from the railroad bridge at Charleston West Virginia 185 feet above water Friday morning. Tyrrell struck on his right side and suffered internal injuries. He was pulled from the water in serious condition and fears of death. Russell dived and landed on his feet uninjured, swimming to the boat. Russell won a purse of $200.

General de Clouet Dead in Louisiana at 78

General Alexander de Clouet died at his plantation near St. Martinsville Louisiana aged 78. He served in the Legislature from 1837 nearly until the Civil War and helped frame Confederate constitutions as a secessionist leader. He was a Brigadier General in Confederate service.

Three Burned to Death in Hutchinson Gas Explosion

A gasoline stove accident in Hutchinson Kansas Friday killed William Hammell his wife and a young child. Mrs Hammell' s clothing caught fire during the attempt to rescue her and both parents died before help arrived. The child was badly burned. The Hammell family were prominent residents.
