Hill Fights Income Tax Amendment in Senate Campaign

In Washington on June 27 Senator Hill led a long Senate session against the income tax on bonds and inherited property. His proposals to exempt state and municipal securities failed in votes of 24 to 30 and 26 to 34, with only a few Democratic allies in support. The tariff bill processing continues, with about eighteen pages more of the income tax provisions to go. Indiana Epworth Leaguers prepare for a major convention in Pracie with over 1,100 delegates expected. President appoints Charles DeKay to a Berlin post as part of a batch of nominations.

JUSTICE HARLAN PRAISES CARNOT AS FRANCE'S LEADER

Washington June 27 Mr Justice Harlan praised President Carnot calling him eminently qualified to lead France and noting France loved him. He said Carnot never spoke or acted contrary to dignity and rarely did anything imprudent. He expressed hope justice would be done to Carnot after his murder and described Madame Carnot with sympathy.

Train Robbery Near Hornerville Routs Express Safe

Train No 6 on the Savannah Florida & Western Railroad was held up near Hornerville at 2 am by six armed men. The express safe was blown open with dynamite and its contents were taken. The engineer Jenkins was forced to move the engine then carry the robbers eleven miles. A posse with bloodhounds pursues, with suspects believed to flee toward Okefenokee swamp.

National park plan for Shiloh battlefield gains support

Washington reports a bill by Representative Henderson for a national park on the Shiloh battlefield granting 3000 acres to federal control with land acquisition at 12 per acre. Paris June 27 A remarkable incident at the Elysee Palace left President Carnot's coachman dead after fainting on seeing the coffin. The coffin slipped from handlers as it was moved from the hearse, falling and injuring five or more workers, the pallbearers bearing the weight.

Elevator outage ends in death for Clinton building janitor

In Columbus on Tuesday morning William J. Dehl, longtime Clinton building janitor, was killed when the elevator descended with his neck caught in the motor. Janitor Frank Fields had left him in the basement for water when the elevator stalled near the first floor. John Morris alerted authorities.
