Whist Congress Opens At Manhattan Beach

The sixth American Whist congress opened in the Oriental hotel Manhattan Beach under the American Whist League. About 100 league clubs represented with delegates from Seattle San Francisco and New Orleans. Officers elected include Theodore Schwarz president Col Frank Allen assistant recording secretary Bertram Ts Kribben recording secretary Benj L Richards treasurer and Robert M Weems corresponding secretary. Several women whist teachers from Philadelphia Columbus and Salem attended as players.

Storms in Iowa Kill Several and Flood Sioux City

Severe storm rain and lightning struck Iowa towns as Sioux City endured flooded streets. Mrs. Mary Paulson died from a lightning strike in Sioux City. Altgeld Nominated for Governor on Free Coinage Platform

Democratic convention renominates Gov Altgeld by rising vote and acclamation. Judge Monroe C. Crawford of DuPage County named lieutenant governor candidate. The platform endorses bimetallic money with gold and silver legal tender and calls for repeal of demonetization of silver, arguing it harmed farmers, laborers, and industry.

Cigarette Smoking Blamed in Death of Local Youth

Fr Wayne Ind June 24 police found a young man intoxicated on Chicago street taken to the station fell asleep and died at Hope hospital. Post mortem found nicotine in his stomach and doctors say excessive cigarette smoking caused the death.
