Crowded Massachusetts courtroom erupts in cheers as Lizzie Borden is found not guilty of murder. The verdict follows a long trial with witnesses, intense cross examination, and a tearful exit from the court. Borden returns to Fall River with Emma, widely respected after the ruling.
Chauncey M. Depew and Edward Everett Hale will lead oratory at the world’s fair Fourth of July. Frederick Douglass and Robert Lincoln will address crowds in the mammoth arena as bells ring nationwide at exactly noon Chicago time, with an immense pyrotechnic display to close the day.

Joseph Hood aged 65 of Payson was killed at his home when he fell from a cherry tree. He struck his head, fracturing the skull, and died while being carried into the house.

A Long Island Railroad excursion train carrying about 1,000 from Sheepshead Bay races derailed in a Parkville tunnel killing nine and injuring many. Names of the dead include Patrick Daly and HS Pringle. others died at Seney hospital. Engineer John Bachner and conductor George Ormsby gave no statements as coroner orders an inquest.
In New London on Tuesday Cornell defeated Columbia by eleven boat lengths in the annual Thames race. Official times were Cornell 10 minutes 8 seconds, Columbia 10 minutes 43 seconds.
A five story wooden block in Duluth destroyed by midnight fire. Four people burned to death with eighteen occupants on the upper floors and unknown causes. Fire officials fear higher death toll as several bodies recovered and others believed trapped in the ruins. Names of identified victims include Mary Ford age 65 and her son Robert Ford age 6 along with Elizabeth Mayher 35 and her child Celia.
Berlin reports a ground sink in Schneidmeuehl near Posen with many buildings unsafe or ruined. The event follows artesian well activity draining an underground reservoir. Schneidmeuehl has about 12 000 inhabitants and residents are panic-stricken. New York notes trunk line agents recommend one fare for round trip to Chicago on special World’s Fair trains, with express service and 30 hour trip time.
Springfield June 22 Gov Altgeld approved contracts for conditional sale or lease of railroad equipment creating the office of insurance commissioner regulate foreign building loan and homestead associations also the Ferns antitrust bill and the bill defining trusts and conspiracies against trade. Fresh riots in Brescia demand dispersal by military over fifty wounded and many arrested. New York Northern Pacific directors accept Henry Villard resignation and elect John D Rockefeller as president with the president remaining as chairman.
Lieut. Gov. Daniels asks Jev Lewelling to convene western governors to press for rapid rate reductions at the World’s Columbian exposition. Governor undecided. In Iowa Middleton exits cowboy race. Gillespie and Jones lead with Berry and Albright behind. China approves Sir Robert Hart postal reform plan for nationwide rollout. France reports four cholera deaths in Cette and one in Lyons.
San Francisco June 22 United States Senator Leland Stanford died at his Palo Alto residence after a sudden decline. He had remained active days earlier but his condition worsened, with apoplectic symptoms and weight loss leading to death shortly after midnight. Stanford's career spanned law, California governorship, and driving the Union Pacific railroad to completion.
The Iowa republican convention is set for Des Moines on August 15. Margaret Manton Merrill, noted lecturer and newspaper writer, dies in New York. An earthquake shocks felt across North and South Carolina and Georgia. World’s fair admissions tally Tuesday is 00 661, with total to date 2 636 388. Brazilian world’s fair commissioner Josef S de Oliviera dies in New York. William Beck of Downers Grove Illinois killed by a train at Naperville while intoxicated. Greenville Illinois endures heavy rain and wind damaging shade trees and crops. Chicago sewer overflows cause business district damage. In Flat Prairie Texas during an emancipation day celebration four black people killed and many wounded. Senate finance subcommittee report notes fifty years of rising prices and wages.
Trouble erupts at the Cheyenne agency as an enlisted Indian deserts from Fort Keogh and resists capture. Indian police pursue, Fort Keogh orders Lieut. Marshall and Indian cavalry to enforce arrest. Reports claim a fight with five Indians killed. Fort Keogh officials remain unconfirmed.
James H. Hausel was killed instantly when struck by an Illinois Central world’s fair train at Thirty-ninth street on Wednesday morning.
