Mine Disaster in Austrian Silesia Kills Hundreds

A series of coal mine explosions at Karwin in Austrian Silesia destroys ventilation shafts and spreads fire. About 200 miners are reported dead, including 120 in the Franziska pit and 80 in the Johannes pit. A rescue party descending into a pit also perishes. Ownership is attributed to Count Vor Larish.

Daughters Drowned After Leaky Boat Incident at Twin Lake

In Willmar Minnesota on June 16 Emma Vovez's three daughters went onto Twin lake in a leaky boat with no oars. One girl panicked and jumped in, her sister tried to save her and both drowned while the third drifted to shore. Meanwhile in Belle Vernon Pennsylvania strikers at Brownsville voted to return at the Columbus agreement ending hopes of continuing a strike by the fourth pool miners.
