At Erie basin South Brooklyn the transfer Ingalls slipped from dry dock and capsized. About 240 workers on site and around 20 Italian laborers in the hold were involved. One painter, Martin Anderson, was killed. many injured or missing as the dock sank in 50 feet of water.
In Sylvania Georgia on June 15 five Black men Arnold Augustus Andrew Davis Richard Sanders Wm Hudson and Sam Paldwin were executed together for murder of Constable Mears Fillmore Harrington and wounding Capt Wade. Local troops guarded the private hanging amid rumors of a rescue attempt.
Mrs. Anna Dolinski and her three children, detained in a Brooklyn measles hospital, know only that her husband is a prisoner in Chicago awaiting execution for murder. Immigrants learned he was sentenced to be hanged for killing a man during a robbery attempt, a fact not yet disclosed to the woman.

During Mrs. Bridget McDonough's funeral on Second avenue near the Eliza furnace an explosion hurling molten metal and slag injured four drivers and wrecked the hearse and two carriages. George Oliver was seriously burned while the two daughters escaped as their carriage caught fire but its occupants fled. The hearse glass shattered and the roof collapsed, leaving only the bed and wheels.
United States minister to China Edwin H. Conger visits Washington to meet the president and Secretary Hay prior to resuming duties in Peking. He has been kept informed by the state department and plans a brief visit to New York before sailing from San Francisco around July 17.
Dispatches from Peking indicate Mr Rockhill has sent new proposals on the Chinese concessions and indemnity. Ministers weigh minor terms and may accept the British plan, while the U.S. arbitration suggestion at The Hague appears dead.
The body of Baron Von Ketteler, the German minister murdered in China, was removed from the legation grounds on Saturday morning and shipped to Germany. Repressive ceremonies followed, with military and diplomatic participation and an American guard of honor guiding the remains to the train. Dr. Mumm Von Schwartzenstein conveyed German officials appreciation to Maj. Robertson of the American legation guards.
Coroner's jury in Montreal reports Mrs. Redpath shot twice, once in the head and once in the shoulder, while young Redpath was killed by a bullet to the temple. The verdict states the son killed his mother in a temporary insanity during an epileptic fit, then took his own life.
A blaze at the Mineral Springs hotel in West Baden Indiana on June 15 sent guests scrambling in night attire after the kitchen fire disabled electric lighting. Officials estimate total losses at about 300000 including 250000 for the building and 50000 in jewelry and clothing. many escaped with minimal possessions and several narrowly avoided injury.
A major blaze at the National packing house in Mexico City burns the facility with losses estimated at 300000. A banked safe in the office reportedly held about 10000 in cash. its contents remain uncertain due to debris. In another dispatch from Terlin 15 June German losses in China are given.
The wooden ferry Northfield sank within 29 minutes after a collision with the Mauch Chunk off the Staten Island slip. Authorities say 100 or more may have drowned, though some captains dispute the toll. Capt. Abraham Johnson of the Northfield was arrested on criminal negligence charges.
Samuel Baca, an American, was killed by Mexican military authorities in Chihuahua after his extradition for leading a raiding gang into Mexico. The gang of six tortured a Mexican merchant and his wife before revealing the victim’s money.
Orba Mc Clain and Mrs. Lizzie Mitchell are jailed in Wabash for kidnaping a young girl. Albert Mitchell, the father and former husband, identifies the child and plans to prosecute Mrs. Mitchell to the finish after the child was stolen from Northern Missouri and found with the fugitives near Lincolnville.
Frank Olding of Dubois county was bound over in Jasper to the circuit court on $200 bond for attempting to kill Mrs. Catherine Ferry an alleged witch. Neighbors report Mrs. Ferry walking at night and making mysterious signs. She reportedly feigns distress when disliked people approach and lives with a dwarf sister.
Three hundred fifty workers at Cameron Pump Co shops on East Twenty third street go back to work unconditionally. National Metal Trades association says $509,000 strike fund is ready for distribution. Strikers vow to continue the fight until they win.
New York reports failures for the week showing 185 in the United States, 17 in Canada, with changes from the previous week and prior years. The data compare current figures to last week and to 1899 1898 and 1897 levels.
A census volume lists England five largest cities by population excluding London: Liverpool 684,947 Manchester 543,960 Birmingham 522,182 Leeds 428,953 Sheffield 380,717. It also gives England and Wales male and female totals and notes men abroad in the army.
