On June 1 at 2:30 am Pekin time the Tsung Li Yamen replied to the legation crisis ultimatum agreeing to withdraw opposition to landing a marine guard. A large multinational force is already en route from Tien Tsin by special train, including Americans British Indians French Russians and Japanese.
A special train carried seven American officers and 56 men, three British officers and 72 men, three Italian officers and 39 men, three French officers and 72 men, four Russian officers and 71 men, and two Japanese officers and 24 men. Five quick firing guns accompanied the force as foreign troops move toward Pekin amid expectations of gatefront opposition.

An Evansville Ind tele phone message dated June 1 reports a flour mill flywheel burst at Elberfeld killing Henry Bond Jr a mill proprietor instantly.
A male resident, described as wealthy and a citizen, shot himself with an eight rifle in a suspected drinking-related incident. Police are investigating the motive and circumstances surrounding the death.
United States transport Crook reaches Santiago de Cuba with a party of Porto Rican teachers en route to New York. The Milwaukee biennial convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers adjourned sine die.
