Chinese reporters in the walled city say foreigners in Peking are living in a bomb-proof building. Several powers have assurances of safety for their representatives, though belief is mixed. Reports originate from Tien-Tsin via Che-Foo and Shanghai in mid July.
London reports a long interview between Sir Chih Chen Lo Feng Luh and Lord Salisbury. The Chinese minister backs Sir Claude McDonald’s safety claims, but the foreign office clings to rumors of mass murders at Peking and awaits verifiable evidence. In Chicago at Drexel Park six men and three boys armed with revolvers attempted to rob a Big Four train but were repelled after police arrived. Three boys were captured. the six men, including three colored suspects, fled. In Atlalla Alabama a 15 year old daughter of Leander Wilson said a Negro attempted assault. a statewide posse hunted the suspect. If captured he faces lynching.
An explosion of a steam tube on the Trilby owned by Fred L. Spink of Scriba Oswego county caused the deaths of three of Mr Spink s children and injured his wife and two other children in Syracuse New York July 25 authorities reported.
Buffalo reports a fire destroying the Eastern elevator on the island opposite Washington street. The loss includes the elevator and contents valued at 750000 dollars. Cause of the blaze remains undetected.
In Georgetown Kentucky on July 25 the Powers trial continued with mainly corroborative testimony. Ella Smith and Bessie Hardin supported prior statements while James Fletcher and George Lockhart described plans and threats. It was announced that Youtsey will not testify and direct testimony to this side would finish by Saturday.
In Macon Georgia on July 25 a Black farm hand named Hillsman, held for alleged assault on a planter's 14 year old daughter, was lynched near Knoxville after a preliminary hearing. He had been brought to Macon for safety to avoid a mob, but was killed before return to jail.
Col. William J. Bryan has accepted an invitation to attend the Grand Army national encampment in Chicago next August. Gen. John C. Black, chairman of the invitation committee, has received his formal acceptance.
Tommy Ryan of Syracuse and Jack Root of Chicago fought a six round draw at Tattersall's. Neither boxer held a clear edge, though Ryan sent Root to the floor with a right hook in the first round.
