Washington scene as Brigham H Roberts faces expulsion amid heated debate. Mrs Roberts attends from the reserved gallery while supporters applaud and opponents hiss. Littlefield’s defense of seating then expulsion gains strong backing. Lacey proposes two thirds vote to eject without seating.
Washington January 24 the senate devoted the session to speeches. Turner of Washington closed his address on the Philippine question. Ross of Vermont followed with a prepared speech tying the Philippine issue to his resolutions. McEnery of Louisiana closed with a speech on the southern race question. He endorsed Louisiana’s constitution and an amendment to North Carolina’s constitution allegedly aimed at disfranchising many voters.
Judge Pennypacker granted a five day injunction in common pleas court restraining the steam er Bermuda from leaving the port. George R. Jamble of Kingston Jamaica, a British subject, claims the vessel will carry contraband of war to South Africa for the Boers.
London reports the death of Prof David Hughes at age 69. The Kentucky born inventor of the Hughes telegraph instrument also developed the induction balance and discovered the myographone used as a telephone transmitter. His device is in use on major continental lines and transatlantic submarine lines.
Brig. Gen. Chas. W. Squires dies at his St. Louis home at age 60. He led the Washington battery of New Orleans in the Civil War and later served as brigadier general of militia on Gov. John S. Phelps’s staff. He organized Battery A and commanded it during the 1877 riots in St. Louis.
Reports from Seattle describe the Townsend wrecking on rocks near Haynes Mission after initial stranding near Battery Point. The crew escaped to shore, while Cottage City rescued passengers and towed the City to Juneau. A second vessel City of Seattle, overdue from Skagway, was found floundering near Point St Mary and Point Bridget with damaged propeller.
Adjutant General Lambert of Minnesota travels to Washington to obtain authority to present claims of Minnesota Volunteers from the 12th and 14th regiments for extra pay. The soldiers contend they did not receive an additional 20 day furlough and did not leave the country, challenging the basis for extra pay.
Washington reports that Webster Davis assistant secretary of the interior is on sick leave. His travel is personal and unofficial and no official or political significance should be attached to his movements. Secretary Hitchcock briefed the cabinet on the matter.
Washington reports inspectors urge closing Remus and Avoca offices for 30 days due to smallpox in Oklahoma. Mail from certain points will be fumigated and offices shut as ordered. Fumigation also planned for mail west of Weatherford.
Washington reports the death in Omaha of Gen. T. H. Stanton former paymaster general famed as the fighting paymaster for his insistence on a place in the front during Indian outbreaks. He had been ill for a long time.
Washington Jan 24 Officers recently promoted have been assigned to regiments Col Charles W Miner to the 6th infantry Col James M J Sanno to the 18th infantry Lieut Col Charles L Davis to the 6th infantry and Lieut Col Frank D Baldwin to the 4th infantry.
In Johnson City Tennessee the body of Wi A Norris aged 60 was found near Union City with throat cut from ear to ear. His knife and razor lay 50 feet away and murder is suspected. Blood hounds have been requested. Norris was out of money and despondent. In Denver Colorado Guy Dennett aged 21 a nephew of Hawaii's President Dole attempted suicide by cutting his wrist. He was out of money and despondent and is expected to recover.
The state department issued a warrant for the surrender to Mexican authorities of Isaac Loya who is held in El Paso on a murder charge in Chihuahua.
London dispatches report Warren holding ground at Spion Kop area with British artillery shelling enemy trenches. An attempted seizure planned for night, Boer forces estimated around 2,000 at that front, with casualties and fortifications noted. Gaberones reports Boer stronghold 10 miles south. rail lines damaged near Crocodile pools. Additional items include a reception in Cape Town for American officials and talks of exchanges of prisoners.
Modder River reports a heliograph message from Kimberley saying the Doers have vigorously renewed bombardment in the area. The terse dispatch notes continued shelling and renewed activity on the front.
In Ladysmith reporting from January 22 23 British operations near Trichard's drift and Potgieter's drift show the left and right positions of the enemy held and the forts under fire. Gen Buller's turning movement stalls while Gen Euler plans a night assault on the Spion Kop heights to command the surrounding country. Heavy shelling continues with the Boer big gun on Mount Bulwana firing as bombardment persists.
Dispatch from Mafeking dated January 10 notes artillery attacks have begun, while reports from Oliviers Hoek road describe ongoing combat near Spions Keep between Boer forces under Pretorius and Botha cronje and 6,000 British troops. Shelling described as not heavy.
Washington January 24 Henry A Hazen chief forecaster of the weather bureau is dead from injuries after a bicycle collision with a black pedestrian. His skull was fractured and he remained unconscious until death. Born in India about 50, he was Dartmouth graduate and 9 years with Yale before joining the Signal Service in 1881. He was single and lived with a sister, two nephews, and another sister who is a missionary.
In executive session the senate discussed Senator Jones Ark motion to reconsider the ratification. Support and opposition speeches followed. A roll call showed a quorum missing with 11 in favor and 22 against when the call proceeded.
In La Salle on January 24 three men died in separate incidents. Switchman Nicholas Leddyck was run over and killed, miner George Tietis perished in an electric car accident, and William Robertson of Sheridan, Illinois, died in the Illinois Central yards. In New York City on the same date William Miller, linked to a 520 percent Franklin syndicate in Brooklyn, has been located in Canada under surveillance.
Chicago January 24 A frame factory of William Goodrow & Co. on North Sangamon Street was destroyed by fire with losses estimated at 60000 dollars.
