Nearly 500 delegates attended the United Mine Workers national convention in Indianapolis with about 100 more expected. States represented include Illinois 130 and Indiana 60, with a total of 100000 workers across 27 states. Indiana seeks 18 cents per ton, a 7 cent differential for machine mining, and a 1¼ inch Akron bar screen demand. Others plan 10 cents on pick coal and 12 1/4 cents on machine coal.

He leaves a widow Miss Farrell of Peoria Illinois and a cousin of the late Robert Ingersoll. He served in the Spanish American War at Key West. He was appointed from Pennsylvania in the war era.
Gen. George Henry Sharpe of Kingston New York died in New York City at age 72 after an operation. He was brevetted major general for Civil War service and served on General Grant's staff at Appomattox where he held the Army of Virginia and General Lee’s parole.
Conservative estimates place 8,000,000 bushels of coal in the harbor awaiting shipment. Of this total 1,395,000 bushels have been moved downstream, with all towboats in service. Most of the coal is headed for Louisville and New Orleans.
In Helenwood Tennessee A. Chitwood was shot and killed by Elvin Phillips after a quarrel over change. Phillips fled the scene. In Manchester New Hampshire a 65 year old man A Blanchard his 43 year old wife and a 58 year old boarder William Money died in a house fire the cause is unknown.

Buller’s Tugela movements loom, while Warren advances raise hopes. Boer sorties and Kimberley bombardment rumors add tension as strategists weigh front-wide risks.

Mitchell Indiana January 15 The B C S W railroad spends 1 5 million to straighten and shorten its Indiana line over five miles. Four thousand men will work weather permitting. Willow valley tunnel will be 1 080 feet cutting over two miles and several curves. Big Mitchell tunnel lowered nine feet and length 1 70 feet. Twenty five contracts rebuild track up to fifteen miles from present right of way.
Frank Percell and two companions, jailed in Petersburg, Indiana, face imminent lynching threats over the murder of William Riss of Arthur. Riss, returning from a party with two youths, was shot in the eye by Percell who then fled. officers rushed the trio to safety to avert mob violence.
Indianapolis January 15 Goods Hart Bros & Co of Cincinnati petitions the United States court to set aside the discharge in bankruptcy of Nathan Amberg of Lafayette. The firm says it sold a large bill of merchandise to Amberg but there were no assets to pay the claim. Amberg had claimed no property while secretly owning an $8,000 stock of goods shares in an electric company and other property.
John Schnaeble aged 74, an inmate at a home for the aged but not a charity member, cut his hand off with a pocket knife in a lavatory and bled to death. He was found dead when inmates broke in. he had a son in Brooklyn and his mind was reported unbalanced at home.
The case of Frederick Chapin charged with forging Sterling R. Holt's name on notes totaling 3500 dollars ended with a not guilty verdict after the jury deliberated an hour in Brazil Indiana. Zeller and Riddle Bank and the First National Bank have since filed suit to collect the alleged forged notes.

The body of C. E. Briggs from South Bend was found four miles west of Fort Wayne in a bushes clump with a bullet wound to the head. A letter to his son Harry at Notre Dame university indicated a deliberate death by self-inflicted action, with no motive known.
Evansville dispatch reports coal miner John Purcell a Washing ton resident shot and killed a young man named Roff at the Hartwell mine in Pike county after a month on the job. Purcell was arrested an hour later. Indianapolis reports 83 year old English actor John Saunders died in the city. he performed with Jefferson and other leading actors in major theaters.
T. J. Nolan, recently injured in the Monon railroad wreck at Carrs Station, died at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Lafayette from injuries sustained in the crash.
