Senatorial vote backs Cuban belligerent rights amid criticism

Prohibitionist Ticket Named by Indiana State Conventi

The Indiana prohibitionists met in Indianapolis on February 29 and nominated a full state ticket headed by Rev. E. G. Shouse for governor. Other posts include J. G. Kingsbury for lieutenant governor and Saylor for attorney general, with electors chosen for each district and seventeen delegates named to the national convention led by Rev. J. M. Daniel.

Gallery Collapse at Polo Match Kills One, Traps Many

At a Polo game in Fairnt River Massachusetts on February 29 a gallery balustrade failed sending about 150 spectators tumbling 30 feet into the rink. One man Narcisse Menard died from injuries after emergency doctors improvised a hospital on the rink. Over fifty were injured with many unaccounted. police and doctors rushed to aid. Capt. Cotter helped prevent panic as five rows collapsed.

Ex-Hinshaw Case Bill Of Exceptions Filed In Indiana

Hogan and Clark attorneys for Rev. William E. Hinshaw filed a bill of exceptions in the Indiana Supreme Court. The record is reportedly six thousand pages, claiming improper verdict support and judicial error in denying a new trial. Hinshaw remains in the penitentiary after four months.

Independent Club forms in Terre Haute aims for minor league spot

Favorable Report on Discrimination Bill in Civil Service

Washington February 29 The house committee on reform in the civil service ordered a favorable report on a bill making it a misdemeanor to discriminate against any person on account of political affiliation for appointment to any civil service position. The law applies after appointment and violations carry fine or imprisonment or both. The second item notes unrest over a whiskey distiller in Jackson township Union county prompting religious opposition.

Shortage Found in Ex City Attorney Moreland Accounts

Pittsburgh February 29 The city auditors reviewing the accounts of ex City Attorney Moreland, already under indictments for malfeasance and embezzlement, report a new shortage of 3725.38 dollars from a street openings account he handled personally. The controller will present the finding at a special common council meeting next Tuesday. No further information will be released until council acts on the report.

Boiler Explosion Kills Five in Greenbrier County West Virginia

A boiler at W H Overholt’s Frankfort works exploded at noon Friday. Five men died and five or six others were seriously hurt. Miss Jennie Usely of Campbellville Muskingum county sought relief after wandering penniless from Ironton to Chillicothe. She slept under a covered bridge where she says two colored men assaulted her, yet she was jailed five months as a witness and later released with only one dollar in witness fees.

Point Loma Totals in Astoria Wreck After Leak and Pump Failure

The steam schooner Point Loma valued at $75,000 is a total wreck off the Washington coast near Fort Canby lighthouse.
