A disastrous Diamondville No 1 coal mine fire in Kemmerer Wyoming killed about 49 miners. rescuers were repelled by flames and efforts to reach entombed workers failed. property losses are mounting while cause remains unknown.
Reports from Cape Town say Boers attack the village of Richmond as reinforcements are dispatched from Hanover road and De Arr. General De Wet recrosses north of Kranshkuil and south of Orange River. Heavy rain floods the river, hindering Boer crossings as Col. Thornscroft and other columns pursue. Commandant General Botha with about 2000 Boers reportedly breaks from French toward Komatipoort.
A skirmish occurred between Haytians and Dominicans on the northern frontier near Dajabon and Quanaminthe. The Dominican consul at Cape Haytien was ordered to the scene to quell the violence and protect the Haytian consulate at Dajabon.
Decomposed body of a man about 35 years old was found in a heavy oak box on a sand bar near the Naskania river. Head severed. death estimated three months prior with no clues. Also found dead Maggie Hoel, missing since December 24, suspected murder in Pueblo Arkansas River. Edward T. Williams appointed Chinese secretary to the U.S. delegation in Peking. In the Senate the battle over insular amendments heated up as the Cuba and Philippine measures faced sharp opposition. Senator Spooner defended the Philippine amendment while Senators Morgan and others criticized it. An evening session continued the debate. In the House the naval bill was amended to drop authorizations for two battleships and two cruisers, with the Senate amendment later rejected by the House. A conference on the naval bill and a five man claims commission bill proceeded, as Tawney sought to differ from the Senate’s expo bill amendment but was blocked by Shepherd.
In Biwabik Minnesota on February 26 an Elba mine shaft car accident killed three boys. Five boys rode the car. one child reversed the switch, sending the car toward the shaft opening. Two brothers were saved by a quick pull, but the car plunged to the bottom, killing the three victims instantly. The deceased were two of Joseph Feit’s sons, aged 10 and 12, and Andrew Schlakdich’s son, about ten.
In Smith Center Kansas on Monday Mrs Campbell wife of farmer John Campbell shot and killed Hubert Day her son in law. Campbell had ordered Day off the farm Day returned to the house and was shot as he reached the door. Day had married Campbell’s daughter about a year ago but they have not lived together recently.

Embittered by perceived neglect, Mrs. P O Gray wife of Perry O Gray Liberia attorney general drank carbolic acid Friday night and died Sunday in Provident hospital. The couple married in 1891, separated a year later and the husband later joined the Liberian government line grant project.
John Hewitt an Ironworker in Newcastle entered a museum while drunk and stole an eight foot python. He ran to a nearby barroom and dropped the snake on the counter causing a stampede before the bartender and patrons armed clubs to kill it. Hewitt was arrested at his home and the snake found on him.
Mrs Catherine Seeley, who shot her former husband W A Seeley in Kansas City, posted 750 bond and faces trial on March 25. In Minneapolis, Frank H Hamilton was sentenced to seven years for first degree manslaughter by Judge Brooks at the Stillwater prison.
In Desplaines a private bank failed to open on Monday with about 220000 dollars in deposits from workers and 6000 dollars from the village. Officials cite experiments with liquid air as the cause of the trouble.

J M Adams was fatally shot during a Curtis wholesale liquor raid in Topeka as about 50 men attacked a beer delivery. Rev Emerson and Dr Mitchell were involved.
