John Logan of Cross Roads, Yorn County, dies at 88. Appointed postmaster in 1837 during Van Buren's administration, he served continuously until his death. Also notes presidential nominations sent to the Senate for two judges from Kansas and Alabama.
Five miles east of Krystom Williams and Smith argued over a card game. Revolvers were drawn and a duel ensued in which Smith was shot three times and died almost instantly. Williams remains at large.
In Cuicaco on Feb 21 a new leather combine with capital of 60 million dollars is organized to take over tanneries outside the United States Leather Co. The plan calls for no antagonism toward the U S firm. The Cormoran heads to Samoa after leaving Kiao Chou. In Cubaneo on Feb 22 R J Walsh, a leading real estate dealer, is shot dead by employee John Driscoll in the Roanoke building hallway.
