In Philadelphia on February 9 Judge Dallas appointed receivers for the Reading railroad and related companies at the suit of ex Senator Thomas C. Platt who held third income bonds. The appointees are Archibald A. McLeod Edward M Paxson and Elisha P Wilbur with 5000000 sureties. Platt says the company is insolvent and he cannot obtain interest on his bonds.
Washington February 22 Postmaster General Wanamaker cites January 1893 sales of 1,870,483 at 103 offices rising to 29,254,476 with 1,708,666 from the Columbian stamp. People favor the new issue by three to one over the old, boosting total monthly sales by about 20 percent. Paymaster Halford becomes army paymaster and heads to Paris with Behring Sea commissioners. Foster to accompany him. The president nominates Col. Hwetl Otis for brigadier general of infantry.
In Bismarck on February 22, W. N. Roach of Island Forks was elected U S senator after sixty one ballots. On the first call of the sixty first ballot he secured 42 votes, sweeping in all Democrats and independents along with Davis and Halvorson, two Republicans.
