A fast Atlantic service could shorten the trip to fifty three days from Quebec or New York via London Brindisi Hong Kong Yokohama and Vancouver. A future Siberian rail line could cut the journey to thirty eight days from London to Yokohama then Vladivostok to London by rail.
Shanghai dispatches describe a mass execution in Pekin with fourteen condemned. Nine to be beheaded and five to be hanged were marched in wagons to the site. The nine wore red, were forced to dig two foot graves, and were executed swiftly by beheading or strangulation. In Des Moines the Iowa House debated speakership terms, adjourning to 2:30 p.m. to allow Republicans to decide.
Arlington, Ore Wake Dickens was shot and killed by his brother Seeb Dickens last Friday morning near Hardman after attending a ball. Wake, an unmarried man, had escorted Seeb’s wife to supper. Seeb, jealous, fired during the return and surrendered to authorities.
New Orleans reports a bright Mardi Gras as the grand street pageant moved at noon with crowds lining crowded thoroughfares. Visitors flock from across the nation to witness the celebratory season amid a festive city atmosphere.
Chicago and St Louis police pursue a man linked to the Cronin case. Det Thomas says the suspect, possibly J B Simonds or John B Kelly, denies involvement but admits being sought by Chicago authorities. Chief Marsh notes the arrestee resembles the fugitive Simonds and Smith in height hair and build.
The South Dakota House passed a joint resolution admitting destitution in the state and urging seed wheat aid from public and private sources. It says state and county governments cannot provide relief, placing the appeal for help with Governor Mellette to seek East aid.
Christopher Latham Sholes, Milwaukee pioneer and inventor of the first successful typewriter, died at 838 Racine Street after a fourteen year illness. A former state senator and newspaper man, he helped shape early Wisconsin public life and built the modern typewriting machine.
