Fire and explosion at Park Central Hotel on High and Allen streets Hartford causes massive ruin and at least fifty deaths with many more missing or hospitalized. Rescue effort continues as investigators pursue whether boiler explosion or structural failure caused the tragedy.
A new fourteen story structure at the corner of Tharborn and Adams streets in Chicago was partially wrecked Sunday morning. Overweight of a water tank on the twelfth floor likely caused the collapse, floor tiling, and walls to fail. Workmen in the basement escaped. destruction could have been worse on a weekday. Estimated loss about $4,000.
Berum February 1 The German government is said to favor Secretary Bayard’s settlement plan for Samoa based on joint American British and German control via Apia Congress The United States proposal would set up a tripartite administration of Samoa through that congress.
A shocking Michigan crime describes Frank L. Silvers killing his wife and two daughters after buying a revolver and planning the act, then killing himself. Neighbors found the bodies in silence the next morning, with a note in his pocket claiming the motive would remain unknown.

A large brick barn at J. K. Landis on the corner of Tenth and Troost burned at 11 o clock with ninety four horses lost and seventy five carriages and buggies destroyed. Proprietor J R Hoffman and his family narrowly escaped the flames in adjacent apartments. The blaze as reported in Kansas City dated February 9.

Iowa Governor Larrabee was indicted by the Polk County grand jury for criminal libel in connection with a pamphlet attacking Mrs Tarney. The case centers on a Jackson County theft and the ensuing public dispute over clemency for the boy Chester Turney, with Turney’s mother Mrs Turney seeking a pardon. An indictment was returned Saturday morning after the governor was among witnesses summoned.
A Mississippi farmer, Thomas Willones, lost his home to a Friday night fire. Four of his children were burned to death while sleeping upstairs. Local authorities reported the blaze as the cause with investigations pending.
