Grain markets fall on easing war scare as European politics brighten. May wheat slips about 1 cent, corn and oats also retreat while Liverpool opens lower. Bradstreet shows a smaller world wheat supply and weak Atlantic clearances underpin late-day weakness.
The Burlington road’s special train carrying Henry J. Mayham ran 1 025 miles in 1 069 minutes from Chicago to Denver. The run averaged 54.3 mph overall and 67.54 mph excluding stops, with only a few officials aware of the trip. Depositors will be paid as Newport bank clears 5 000 to the U S Comptroller.

Louisville February 16. Banker J M McKnight and F A Britt council member are charged by federal officers with defrauding the German national of 2000. An unsigned 2000 note signed by Britt and Alderman Reeder was found among bank assets. Reeder was not charged, suggesting his disclosure of the affair.
In Anperon on February 16 Major C T Doxey returns home from Spencer and shows improvement. A sworn court statement filed in the sensational $100,000 suit by Mattie Foland denies all allegations and brands the suit as blackmail. The case will likely be tried this fall.
The Merchants' National Bank of Jacksonville closed at noon with the comptroller appointing Examiner Strubeck to take charge. Depositors withdrew after a December bank statement showed only 5,000 in assets, despite a 20,000 loan from local banks to avert collapse. President Marvin says depositors will be paid in full, but stockholders may lose. The failure affects Charles Marvin & Co a shoe firm that assigned later the same day.

Thomas W. Hynes and Lorenzo Cutler of T. W. Hynes & Co assign their firm to Frank Kinlacher for creditors. Liabilities run about 120000 with nominal assets 175000 and actual assets 100000. Dull business cited. Separately a Wabash city directory lists 8885 residents within city limits.
A California craze for kangaroo hunting ends in laughter and a courtly interruption. General San Francisco interests backed the chase while a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals official halted it, deeming the hunt unsafe for the animal. The restrained kangaroo now rests in its corral, growing fat from easy life.
