London reports no new details from Lord Roberts as battles loom. Cronje’s forces near Bloemfontein stay guarded while Ladysmith relief hopes persist. Casualties at Renousberg and other fronts list several officers and many men.
Near Ladysmith on February 13 General Botha with a small force crossed the Tugela to a deserted British camp and engaged 50 Lancers. Reports say 13 Lancers were killed 5 wounded and 9 captured. One prisoner was sent to tell the British to fetch their wounded.
Cape Town Daily Chronicle correspondent reports that British forces evacuated Rensburg and retreated to Arundel as of Wednesday telegram. The likely withdrawal reflects shifting positions in the conflict and forestalling further operations.
London February 16 the house of commons approved the governments military scheme by 259 to 34 with the minority mainly from the Tory side.

In Iloilo dispatches Boston reports three Massachusetts soldiers from the 26th U S were captured near Balinag after staying behind to retrieve a tuber. They were tortured to death by insurgents in Balinag, under a priest’s implied complicity. Equipment and arms were seized.
Surgeon General Sternberg was informed that a list of named soldiers died while aboard the hospital ship Missouri which arrived at San Francisco from Manila with 269 patients. Gov Merriam appointed Charles F. Martin of Denver as special agent in charge of a new classified census of livestock for the country. The Denver headquarters will coordinate nationwide field work with immediate start and aims to be the first of its kind. The push followed a year of advocacy and congressional funding with support from L G Powers Senator Walcott and others.
John L Pennington died at Sisters Hospital in Los Angeles from cerebral meningitis. A well known newspaper man from a prominent southern family, his father served twice as Dakota governor under Gen. Grant and was in the Alabama legislature. J L Pennington, born in Opelika Alabama on July 8 1867.
