Report says Walter Q. Gresham of Chicago accepted Cleveland's offer to be secretary of state after initial declines. Don Dickinson aided the move, with Cleveland aiming to balance reform and experience. confirmation and residence shifts implied in weeks ahead.
York says Gov Boies declined cabinet portfolio and the offer was extended to Hon W J Buchanan of Iowa. Buchanan leads the world’s fair department of agriculture and is described as an intimate friend of the president elect.
John Grogan and John Morrisey were burned to death about 2 a.m. in Grogan's shanty near the Philadelphia smelter. Neighbors found the charred bodies among the ruins the next morning. Morrisey was a machinist with no known relatives. Grogan had a wife in Bridgeport, Illinois, and owned a ranch near O’Neill City, Nebraska.
The individual bank of F W Rockfellow & Co in Wilkes Barre Pa closed Wednesday morning. City deposits in his hands totaled $51 000 with bondsmen liable for $60 000. The bank carried near a half million dollars in deposits. Rockfellow said he would resume in a few days citing a demand for a $40 000 deposit without notice.
Fire at Heiders hotel 265 West Fifth Street Cincinnati destroys the condemned building. Four people die including Fred Detzel Albert Grau Joseph Maines and Gottlieb a waiter. Grau awakens inmates but cannot escape as the blaze is limited to the hotel.
United States Minister Stevens establishes a protectorate over the Hawaiian islands and raises the US flag at Alluolani hall. Provisional government pledges order and seeks Washington negotiations while foreign powers acknowledge the de facto regime. Public oath of allegiance and four company national guard planned.
In Jackson Michigan, Charles Brown shot his wife and then Dick Sly, an ex-convict, in the Brooks block after noon. Both victims are dying in hospital. Brown was captured after a failed attempt to shoot Alderman John Goebelin. He offered no regret, saying Sly was near Mrs Brown. Separate dispatches report Bell's resignation as Government Architect in Chicago and Milwaukee merchant William Sanderson dying suddenly of heart disease.
Springfield Feb 10 The Illinois Senate and House moved to repeal the compulsory education law with third readings and no opposition. Gov Altgeld or Acting Gov Gill must sign to finalize the repeal. Additional items include pay roll adjustments, racing limits, school board funding, and aid for Phineas W Taintor. A resolution for Hawaii annexation drew lively debate and Indiana cabinet labor proposals were discussed. Senate mourned Mr Blaine's death.
Lansing reports Wednesday saw Representative Summer introduce numerous measures. Proposals include death penalty for murderers and arrestees, insurer payout rules, a constitutional convention, a state board of equalization, and dairy and veterinary offices. Senate likewise fields fish propagation and direct Senate elections by popular vote.
In Tennessee and North Carolina a long running feud between factions led by E K Johnson and Jim Cole escalated when Jim Cole and Tom Hixon came to Johnsons home claiming a warrant. Johnson killed Hixon and Mrs Johnson fatally wounded him then herself. The Johnson family vows retaliation.
Broowlin reports John McCaffrey, 28, fired on his fiancée Sarah Daly after she refused marriage. She mortally wounded. McCaffrey fled and is believed to have died by his own hand. Separate notes: Cynthia Desher and Barley near Lincoln suffer glanders from a pony bite. In Boston, Asa P. Potter, ex-president of Maverick bank, is found guilty of false certification of checks.
Reports from Pine Ridge Agency say bands of Sioux, about 200 strong, are making medicine and war songs while police cordon the camp near the murders. First Battalion Ninth Cavalry at Robinson is organizing to deploy, horses saddled, harness mended, and field readiness underway as tension rises.
Washington reports the treasury holds 7.5 million in free gold with plans to secure 8 million in legal tenders. An additional 88 million legal tenders will be available soon. Officials expect gold reserves to rise to 12 to 15 million depending on drains. Fatal boiler explosion hits Tren Tex station killing Fireman Raspberry and injuring Engineer Wheeler and Michael McHan.
