Dispatch from Manila reports 20 000 insurgents with Krupp guns and Mausers driven back by American forces within a nine mile radius of Manila. Casualties total about 250 for Americans and thousands for rebels, with waterworks and transport disrupted. Reports describe raids, executions, and Filipino reactions as US troops press the advance.
A 35 year old man, blind in one eye, was found on the Scioto river ice under the Big Four bridge after a suspected night train collision. A cigar maker’s card for Adam Mark of Sycamore Illinois, used in St. Louis, Aurora and Bellville Illinois, was found on him. In Manitoba, the Manitoba hotel, the province’s largest hotel, burned at 1 a.m. and faces total loss amid bonspiel crowds. it cost $500,000 to build.
Gen Otis reports up to date Manila combat losses total 197 with 49 killed or missing and 148 wounded. In New York Oscar Gardner defeats Solly Smith in six rounds at the Lenox Athletic Club on Tuesday night.
Washington February 8 The naval committee reports 12 new warships approved with three more under review The ships include three sea going battleships of about 13 500 tons each with heavy armor and armament costing 3 600 000 dollars each Three armored cruisers of about 12 000 tons costing 4 000 000 dollars each and six cruisers of about 2 500 tons built for high speed and strong ordnance
San Juan Porto Rico February reports Governor Guy Volenny has not yet names heads of state justice finance and interior departments replacing the dissolved insular cabinet. He leans to two liberal appointees one radical and one independent as the political balance shifts.
The Madrid correspondent reports that Spanish papers condemn the Manila events for provoking war or risking ridicule. They urge evacuating Manila, freeing Spanish prisoners, and avoiding complications by leaving Americans and Tagals to their difficulties. A Porto Rico politics row and a Tuesday ratification celebration are noted.
Ed Greer, a Negro ex convict who recently completed a penitentiary term for rape, is believed to have assaulted a Negro woman near Dadeville, was pursued by a white posse, and killed Washford, a Black man who led the chase. A siege line remains around the swamp as authorities prepare to confront Greer.
The Daily Telegraph remarks that American forces gave the Filipino rebels a sound thrashing at a small cost, placing Manila in safety until reinforcements arrive to aid Gen Otis. It notes volunteers fought with discipline and gallantry comparable to regular troops. A government red book on the war with the United States has been issued, a 522 page collection of public documents and communications.
The Nashville bears the late Gen Calixta Garcia’s body to Havana where 500 armed Cuban guards will honor him. Maj. Gen. Ludlow grants permission and may participate. The council room hosts a public viewing with Cuban soldiers presiding over the funeral procession.

Denver’s cold wave hits record lows. temperatures at Denver, Pueblo fall below zero. Otis instructed to tell insurgents the treaty is ratified and continue actions against them. Public building reports listed for Pekin Illinois, Eureka California, Slopkinaville Kentucky, Shamokin Pennsylvania, Keaveney Nebraska, Plattsmouth Nebraska, Grand Haven Michigan, Oskaloosa Iowa. Secretary Long relays treaty ratified to Dewey. Aguinaldo may resist, with no quarter if fighting continues. Charles Roberts and others die in a dynamite accident near Coffeyville, Kan.. A. C. Darrow and a Black man are injured. The house notes the accident’s details and wrecked dwelling.
