Democratic finance committee uses star chamber methods to craft a tariff bill likely to face opposition in the Senate. Proposals include a coal duty and possible sugar duties with Alabama senators facing limited resistance. Whisky tax likely increased and whisky bond period extended.
Fire at Jackson park sulfurly damaged the agricultural building as a south wind drove flames. A large stock of Russian wine cases and Col umbian museum seeds and grasses were destroyed. Losses may reach $5,000 and the blaze was likely incendiary.
In Firang Fort Kentucky on February 8 twenty two senators signed and sent to Washington a petition to Senators Lindsay and Blackburn denouncing Judge Beckner's resolution directing their votes on supreme court nominations. The petition asks senators to freely use their judgment in confirming such appointments. The petition was mailed to Washington and Beckner dismissed it by calling the signers cuckoos.
In Noble County Ohio a man named Robert Capel was abducted from a neighbor’s house, ducked in a creek, stripped, and whipped with a hickory until blood ran. He was warned to leave the county on pain of tar and further violence amid accusations of cruelty and neglect.
The Coughlin trial nears its end as defense testimony nears completion. Judge Wing granted an adjournment for one day so the defense could review evidence and shorten the case while the attorney cited illness.
In Pineville Kentucky on a Harlan courthouse street John and Will Turner were killed by Dr Will Nolin after Turner insulted Nolin with a knife Nolin then fired four shots killing Turner John Turner arrived firing prompting Nolin to shoot him as well Nolin surrendered to authorities intensifying fears of further trouble amid old rivalries within the Turner and Nolin families.
In Ewen Wisconsin on February 8 a mob seized Andrew Pikkarien from police and hanged him at a railroad trestle after he confessed to assaulting a sleeping child in nearby Lruce’s Crossing. The crowd dispersal ended with threats to lynch any accomplices as the town reels from the crime and the victim’s death.
In Henderson Kentucky a masked burglar invaded Dr. Andrew Caroline’s Woodbury home in Butler county at 3 a.m. Monday. A gunfight left the doctor fatally wounded and the attacker escaping through an open window toward a waiting vehicle. Mrs. Caroline and their son found the doctor dying as neighbors mounted a search for the assailant.
South Pole news reports Dr. F A Cook proposing a three year Antarctic expedition starting this year with half the $50,000 budget for a vessel. The plan aims to reach the southern pole while other Arctic explorers pursue the north.
The senate approved by 39 to 28 a bill repealing the federal elections law, sending the measure to the president for signature. Democrats provided 38 affirmative votes with Senator Stewart and three Populists joining. Republicans cast 25 no votes led by opposition from Mr. Hoar. The debate covered 1870 law origins and local self government concerns.
Mrs Warri son, former housekeeper for Austin Jennings of Conneaut Ohio, was found with her throat cut from ear to ear in Jennings home. She stayed alone Tuesday night for the first time since Jennings died. Police suppose burglars killed her. no money was left in the house though a wallet sum was deposited in the bank by the executor the day before. There is no crew to the murderers.

Charles Price, alias Port er, arrested in Detroit for train robbery. New York unemployment census shows 49,681 families, 206,701 people.

Buffalo and Philadelphia show varied receipts with cattle and sheep pricing steady to firm, while Toledo reports softer wheat and corn futures.

A young Mexican man toured a New York hotel with a perforated tin box full of cucujo beetles that emit dual headlights from two lantern-like tubercles.
