Earthquake Toll and Damage Across Southern California

A major quake struck southern California early Monday, centered near San Jacinto. Buildings damaged in San Jacinto and Hemit with totals around 39 000 dollars. Santa Ana Riverside and Los Angeles reported tremors but limited further harm. Six Saboba Indians killed at Saboba reservation as walls fell. Additional shocks hit Santa Ana, San Diego, Ventura and Anaheim with scattered injuries and alarm.

Bloody Christmas in Dallas as shootings rampage

Dallas records a spree of Christmas week violence with several fatalities and multiple injuries. Charles Miller killed Walter Meyers and surrendered claiming self defense. Albert Hall wounded Edward Cecil and Murray Cecil. Edward Cecil is described as dying. A masked assailant attacked a Chinese restaurant on Ervay street with a dynamite cracker, striking Dock Coun and later killing Jeff Thomas. John McMullan Clay Patton and Z Phillips were wounded. attackers fled.

Three Die and Twenty-One Injured in Rail Accident

Los Angeles reports three dead and twenty-one injured in a railroad accident on St. Ramona. Victims listed include Monroe Thurman Mrs Rose O Connor and Milton Monroe all from the local area. Washington notes Bushrod Underwood famed for service in the Army of Northern Virginia died aged 56.

New Kenewal Coke Process Under Go Tests in Tennessee

The Tennessee Coal and Coke Co directs tests in Knoxville of a new Kenewal coke method. It aims to solve sulfur-rich coal coking issues by separating by products gas ammonia and tar. Christmas Tragedy Shocks Topeka Family

In Topeka Ikan on December 26 Maggie Kraver fourteen year old daughter of John Drayver was shot and killed after Mrs. William Taylor fired an old musket at the Taylor house during a play session by children including Maggie Drayer. The shot entered the breast and she died instantly. Mrs Taylor's sanity is in question. In Virginia a depot gun fight left Loftis dead and Turner wounded with a mob threatening lynching Turner.

Charity Christmas Nourishes Philadelphia Poor

Christmas in Philadelphia brought vast charity efforts with 8 000 meals served by the Salvation Army. Food baskets and clothing reached destitute families as medical aid and gifts extended to the sick and children.

Baltimore man released after prison term commuted by president

John $& Ho shall, sentenced eight months earlier in the U S district court to ten years in the city jail for postal laws violations, has been freed as the sentence was commuted by President McKinley. He was a medical student at a local college at the time of arrest. Sydney, Nova Scotia reports bubonic plague appears in Noumea with ten Kanakas dead and four whites attacked as the disease spreads. Frank Moore and cousin Cecil Bald ridge, both youths, witnessed a hunting accident on L B Gordon's farm near Recatur, Illinois, resulting in Bald ridge's death.

The War Department releases figures on relief in Puerto Rico from Sept 25 to Nov 30, 1899. Population 918,926. average sick 221,081. weekly deaths 632. Money disbursed $7,417. food relief 17,162,788 pounds issued 16,548,316. unissued 614,272 pounds. Continued need expected through February with 2,000 additional tons required.

Baron Ludlow Dies in London at Seventieth Year

Telegraphic briefs report the death in London of Baron Ludlow of Heywood, former Exeter recorder and later court of appeals judge, in his 73rd year. Other items note strikes in St Etienne, railway talks in Asia Minor, Windsor Christmas, and various political and industrial developments.

Military Governors Appointed in Northwestern Luzon

Gen. Young becomes military governor of Northwestern Luzon with HQ at Vigan. He commands the 33d Infantry and the 3d Cavalry. stations planned at San Fernando and Laoags with outposts as needed. The 10th Infantry moves to Aparri to garrison parts of Cagayan Isabella and Nuevo Vizcaya. Col. Hood named military governor. Civil municipalities to be formed and Northern Luzon ports opened for trade by January 1.

Texas brings Maine sailors to Newport News for Arlington interment

The battleship Texas under Capt. Sigsbee arrived in Newport News with the remains of Maine heroes killed when the battleship Maine blew up in Havana harbor. Bodies will be moved to a Chesapeake & Ohio train Tuesday at noon for transport to Washington and interment at Arlington Cemetery next Thursday.

Big Fire Destroys Large Part Of Hastings Business District

Hastings Minnesota reports a devastating blaze December 26 in the town’s business area. Three blocks of buildings were burned, costing about 200000 dollars. The fire started at R C Libby and Co sawmill and is believed to be arson. The entire plant including a planing mill, storehouses, lumber, office, and sheds were consumed.
