Hugh McCaull a noted thief died early Wednesday while trying to rob G. W. Hoofs commission house at 274 South Water street. He pried a basement window screen to gain access and accidentally pulled the elevator rope, the cage descended crushing him. His chest and back were mangled and the body wedged in the shaft necessitating cutting away part of the elevator to remove him.
