A Le edle dispatch from St Petersburg cites a rumor that Russian forces were driven from Peking after a fierce clash with Chinese troops. It claims 1,500 to 2,000 Russians fell and Chinese troops occupied fortified positions from which bombardment of the Allies continued.
Shanghai cabled dispatches claim Allied forces continue aggressive actions in the district west of Peking. Li Hung Chang reportedly urged the empress dowager to arrest Prince Tuan and disarm the Boxers to facilitate negotiations with foreign powers. Shenghai notes Yang Lu as the genuine anti foreign instigator, with others persuaded to push an extreme stance.
