London reports mixed accounts of the Peking entry with some saying fighting occurred while others claim a peaceful entry. Adm Remey confirms all foreign legations are safe as dispatches note Chinese forces retreat and the imperial court moves toward Shen Si.
Extracts from a dispatch describe Gen Ma missing during fighting near Yang-Tsun. A war council at Yang-Tsun on August 7 decided the immediate push toward Peking. The advance columns were arranged in order: Japanese, Russian, British and American.
The Che Foo consul telegram dated August 17 1900 reports Japanese forces entering Peking after fierce fighting. Allies attacked and surrounding the legations as inmates are said to be safe. Casualties cited: Japanese over 100, Chinese about 300.
Adm. Remey reports from Taku that a Telegram from Tien-Tsin dated Aug 16 says Peking fell on Aug 15 and foreign legations are under danger. Washington notes the developments as of Aug 17 with early 1 am dispatch. The message highlights a critical breach of the capital during heightened conflict.

Daniel Scotsman of Elkhart county awoke in the night and claimed his sons were converted by a heavenly influence. He roused his wife and went with Rev. Hess and Rev. Swinehart to the Elkhart river where he was baptized in the Dunkard faith at 1 AM.
Ada Arthur, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Arthur of Vincennes township, is believed married to Vincennes motorman Frank Vineel at his parents home in Fairfield. The couple’s elopement has agitated the girl’s parents.
New Albany Indiana August 18 relatives of Samuel Cummins founder of the Birdseye News in Birdseye Dubois county have been notified of his death in China He served in the signal corps and was the first man killed in the advance on Peking He was an expert telegrapher and leaves a wife and one child.
May Vassar, of Marion, filed suit in the superior court demanding 5000 dollars from Charles L. Mead for breach of promise. Mead is a prominent businessman in the furniture trade and serves as secretary and manager of the M. C. Mead & Co. electric light plant.
Charles H Otis died in Bedford at age 75 after 64 years as a resident. He was father of editor Fred B Otis who serves as secretary of the republican county committee.

Mail from Yokohama recounts the Oregon’s stranding off the Chinese coast with Capt Wilde promising ammunition if Chinese officers kept safeguards. A Russian cruiser threatened to seize the Hai Chi but Wilde, protecting refugees, urged raising the American flag to deter further inquiry. The flag was flown and cruisers passed without incident.
The steamship Humboldt arrived in Seattle with 96 passengers including 68 Klondikers and over 250000 dollars in treasure led by Clarence Berry who held four boxes worth more than 150000. Dawson advices report five drownings from the Aquilla wreck near Healy Bay on the way to Eagle City. Maurice Marsden was later found afloat two miles downstream.
Detroit reports say United Garment Workers in Rochester unionized shops and called for congressional action. A committee will study immigration and its impact on clothing manufacture to press restricted European immigration. Paris August 17 United States exhibitors earned 1981 awards at the Paris exposition including 220 grand prizes 486 gold medals 583 silver medals 422 bronze medals and a long list for collaborators. The honors span farm products mining forestry cottons woolens silks harvesting machinery sewing presses and more with education and the liberal arts also recognized. Williamson West Virginia August 18 Reverend Thomas Clark shot and killed John Dempsey on Island Creek after months of dispute over a school appointment. Clark will surrender.
A Rome dispatch in Temps reports ministerial discord following a king and ministers conference. Several ministers reportedly wish to resign due to lack of royal confidence. Cabinet changes may occur upon parliament reassembly as the king signals intent to govern with younger, initiative minded ministers.
Sprague Kerr, rich Buffalo commission dealer and noted composer, drowned in Lake Ontario at Bellefontaine after cramps while swimming. He leaves a wife and three children. Kerr sang bass with Buffalo’s First Presbyterian church quartet and was the son of Morrison Kerr, a well known Buffalo stock dealer.
Gen DeWet has managed to elude Gen Kitchener despite a wide pursuit in the Pretoria theater. Reports say DeWet slipped through enemy lines and escaped capture, maintaining his mobility with renewed resistance and strategic retreats.
