Helena Mont April 27 J H Hodson head accountant of the Montana Mining Co operating the Stone Drumlo mon mine died by his own hand at Santa Barbara California due to poor health.
The outlaw Thomas E H Ketchum known as Black Jack was hanged in Clayton New Mexico for train robbery in a stockade built for the event. About 150 citizens watched as the execution occurred at 1 17 p m. The head was severed and blood spattered on spectators. The condemned man met death with no speech uttering a final request to dig his grave deep and shouting Let her go as the cap fell.
Newton JF Chamberlain says the Maine wreck in Havana harbor will be pumped dry, repaired, and floated next fall. He notes the hull lies level, 87 feet 6 inches to bottom, and a surrounding dam will seal water from the wreck before repairs and towing to Havana docks.
In Pittsburgh on April 27 press announces a meeting May 5 to organize the Central Labor Council of the United States. The aim is to unite all unions with central headquarters to coordinate labor and oppose trusts. Knights of Labor hosts and plans a May 5 convention inviting leaders from major groups including the AFL.
Paul Krueger of 979 Winnimacc avenue underwent stomach removal at the Sinois Medical College Hospital by Dr. B E Eads. It was the third successful case. A cancer ate away the stomach. Krueger is recovering and will eat only predigested or vegetable foods.
Hearing opened in the court of admiralty for Adm Samp son and others seeking prize money from vessels captured in the naval fight off Santiago. Arguments align with Dewey proceedings, which concluded Thursday night. Case to continue for several days.

In Chicago on April 27 three men suffocated to death and three others were badly injured in a fire at a rag shop on 2553 LaSalle Street. The upper story housed sleeping Italian laborers and 14 escaped unscathed while six men succumbed to smoke. the injured are expected to recover. London dispatch adds the czar and czarina may privately visit England this season and attend the Glasgow exhibition.
New Orleans April 27 Secretary Hester reports the world's visible supply of cotton at 3,787,627 bales, up from 2,976,314 last year. American cotton totals 2,684,627, compared with 2,324,814 a year ago.
In Indianapolis Judge McMasters ruled for plaintiff Frank Carsin against Phoenix Accident Insurance Co for 30.20 after a kissing bug bite. The court held insect bites that incapacitate a person from work qualify as accidents under the policy. Carsin, bitten on the lip last summer while asleep, was laid up two weeks.
Dispatch from Peking reports a thousand Boxers raiding three villages south of Pao Ting Iu and threatening to kill Christians. In Man-Cheng district a second band plans to attack the city with a German post nearby. Observers say the worst Chinese factions await foreign troop withdrawal to renew extermination of native Christians.
Rose Bud mine near Aurora Missouri caved in burying five men at a depth of 110 feet with 70 feet to the main shaft. The workers Grand Bigler Elmer Bigler William Shane John Gillard and Andrew Foster were alive at 7 pm Friday night with tapping sounds reassuring rescuers. Hundreds labored in relays to reach the entombed men and it would take at least three days to reach them.
Evansville Indiana April 27 The river at 7 PM Friday rose slowly to 40 feet and is expected to reach 49 feet by Sunday afternoon. Union township largely submerged with homes on stilts as residents traverse in skiffs. Downstream at Henderson Kentucky the river remains several miles wide with thousands of logs passing. The river should begin falling Monday. The City of Pittsburgh reported hundreds homeless between here and Cairo.
The contract for furnishing street letter boxes to U.S. cities for the four years starting July 1 was awarded to Steel Box Co of Adrian Michigan. New size boxes are to be installed in government use locations nationwide.

In Elberton Georgia on Wednesday a Black worker William Goolsby assaulted Miss Rhoda Alexander while she fished near her home. He offered six months work to avoid exposure then was taken by family friends and later lynched near the Savannah river.
The funeral was held from the bureau of American republics with many diplomatic corps members and state department officials in attendance. The remains were taken to Baltimore for cremation and the ashes will be sent to Nicaragua for interment.
Miss Josephine Bowen Holman of Indianapolis and cousin of the late Congressman W. S. Holman confirmed reports of engagement to Guglielmo Marconi the wireless inventor. The marriage is said to take place this fall and Miss Holman resides in New York with her mother and sister.
