A massive blast at the electro chemical works near Giesheim caused a firestorm consuming the plant and neighboring houses. About 200 people were killed or wounded as flames and debris filled the area and bodies were recovered by torchlight amid ongoing rescue efforts.
The Bailey completed its official speed trial off New London on April 26 with an average 30.2 knots over two hours and a peak of 31.12 knots. Engines ran smoothly, propellers averaged 403 revolutions per minute, max 418, and the naval board and builders praised the craft’s performance.
The monthly statement shows total internal revenue receipts for March 1901 at 24,030,745 dollars, down 295,923 from March 1900. In Omaha on April 26 a pony tied to the Callahan kidnaping case is linked to James Callahan. Daniel Burris identifies the pony he sold to two strangers last October. one stranger resembles Callahan and the other resembles Pat Crowe. Mrs. Anna Wreath places Callahan with a man she says is Johnson, identified as Pat Crowe.
Junction City Kansas April 26 Mrs Annie Coover attempted to wreck the Exchange saloon using a hammer. She was arrested before causing damage and taken before the police judge charged with malicious destruction of personal property. Trial was postponed.
Lansing April 26 the Michigan house of representatives unanimously approved a stringent anti cigarette measure. If the senate concurs and Gov Bliss signs it will be unlawful to manufacture sell or give away any cigarettes or cigarette paper in the state.
Cincinnati reports the Ohio River reached 59 feet by Thursday afternoon and held at that level near midnight. Flood waters forced Covington's Mitchell-Tranter rolling mill to close with 400 job losses, Star foundry 100 workers idle, and Bogen-Schutz stove works 65 out of work. Estimated half a million bushels of corn could be lost between Evansville Indiana and Paducah Kentucky due to inundation.
New Richmond Ohio reports the river climbed 8 inches overnight and nearly 60 feet by 4 am threatening most homes. Ripley sees a 10 inch rise to about 58 feet with Main Street submerged and 200 families left homeless. Portsmouth notes the Ohio at 8.5 feet and pumps used to drain sewers as authorities monitor rising waters.
Evansville Indiana reports the river rising one inch per hour with a 49 foot stage expected by Saturday morning. Farmers near Paducah may lose about half a million bushels of corn as water invades cellars and logs drift from Green River. A Vienna dispatch reports Brevigina village near Brunn in Lower Austria was utterly burned. The fire left the settlement destroyed with casualties and extensive property loss. Authorities investigate causes as residents assess the damage and begin rebuilding efforts.
Henry Huffman of Columbus, Ohio, working for the Wallace circus, was killed when the elephant Big Charley seized him from the Missouri nwanwa river east of Peru. The elephant then caused chaos, attacked the riverbank, and later fell to a rifle shot. Huffman had previously worked at Fairmount Park and Central Park.
William and Arthur Goins of Marion arrive from New Orleans seeking their brother Joseph whom they had never seen. They left home 30 years ago, were mourned as dead, and found their father in the Indian Territory alive. A happy reunion follows when Joseph is located.
Wabash Indiana reports Will T Moyer formerly a bank clerk here now president of a National Bank in Butte Montana has invested in copper mining stocks and is worth about half a million his friends here learn of his success.
Delbert Eltz, recently back in Mishawaka Indiana, obtained a license to wed Miss Della Althur. The planned Wednesday night ceremony was halted when the bride elect’s mother ordered the groom from her home.
Henry Hill, a steel worker in Peru Indiana, was struck by a falling casting at his job and was knocked into a bed of hot sand. Doctors expect his death as a result of the injuries and the accident is being investigated.
Lebanon Indiana April 26 Gen A C Miller aged 73 commander of the Wilder brigade who became distinguished at Chickamauga and throughout the Atlanta campaign died Thursday morning of pneumonia in Lebanon.
Billy Essman, chief clerk of the last house of representatives, reports a peculiar ailment 60 days in, losing one pound of flesh daily. Doctors have not provided relief, leaving his condition unclear and troubling to observers.

Morristown Indiana April 26 Quincy K Bankerts was killed by a premature dynamite blast while blowing up stumps. George Dennett lost his nose and Joseph Walker was injured in the explosion.
In Evansville Indiana on Thursday night George Sunte was attacked in a saloon by two pickpockets who robbed him and beat him into unconsciousness. The saloon proprietor Harry Bullen chased the assailants but details of pursuit are limited.
Indianapolis on April 26 reports Mrs. Mary Ellen Nageleisen wife of Lawrence Nageleisen died by suicide at 3 a m Thursday drinking carbolic acid.
Laporte Ind April 26 The dry goods and millinery shop of J J Friedman at Michigan City was consumed by flames with its stock. Loss placed at 15000 dollars.

The Virginia Lake with 270 men may be frozen in by Arctic ice near White Bay on Newfoundland's north coast for six weeks. A sister ship, the Kite, with 150 men, is similarly trapped in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Owners fear both ships may be driven ashore. In Muncie Indiana a girl, Essie Nelson, 16, died after taking morphine when her sweetheart Ora Applegate failed to call nightly. Applegate was jailed as the investigation began.
