Two GM&O freights collide at Burksville Station
A head on crash at Burksville Station about 4:20 a.m. killed engineer Leon M. Schaffer of Columbia NL and injured two crewmen. The southbound train with 83 empties hit a stopped northbound train with 117 empties and two loaded cars. Fire followed, extinguished by Waterloo and Missouri Pacific crews. Schaffer’s body was recovered after three hours. He leaves a wife Mabel and nine survivors.

Post Office To Increase Special Services Rates
The Post Office Department will raise rates for five special services starting Saturday March 26 to help reduce a $60 million annual deficit. Money orders rise five cents. insurance minimum goes to 15 with 20 cent base, rising to 60 cents at higher values. Registry combines to 75 cents up to $100, certified mail goes to 30 cents, and C O D brackets adjust to 60 cents up to $10. No change for items over $10.

Volunteers Fill Draft Quota For April
