Endorse Building Program for Columbia Community Unit No 4

Norman W. Beck and Rt. Rev. Msgr. Elmer J. Holtgrave urge voters to support the school district building program. They argue Phase I buildings are needed now and endorse all phases in the long range plan. Election Day is April 2, 1966.

CHS Students Present Bubble Trouble Musical

Auditions for Bubble Trouble were held March 1 and 3 for the Co Hi musical comedy to be staged April 15 and 16 in the Columbia High School old gym. The story by Mel Weiser Al Davis and music by Al Pohlamus centers on Alonso Rude baker and his feud with bubbles.

Planning Commission March 2 1966 Meeting Recapped

Monroe County Planning Commission held a regular March 3 meeting with a full quorum. Citizens from Hecker attended as funds for the second half of the planning program were reported approved by the federal government. Land Use and Housing Committee reports led to agreement on handling plat applications under county rules adopted March 4 1963 and published in the pamphlet Rules and Procedures covering Plats Subdivisions and Vacations in Monroe County Illinois.

Federal flood funds urged in Prairie du Pont district

A 1967 budget amendment is urged to include flood control funds for St. Clair and Monroe Counties. Prairie du Pont Levee and Sanitary District adopted a resolution seeking federal aid to start pumping plants and channels near Palmer Creek Old Prairie du Pont Creek West East and Falling Springs Ditch. Local districts including Fish Lake Drainage and Levee and several villages and townships concurred noting 3920 acres flood yearly from blocked drainage and urging congressional action with studies already done by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Lions Met Tuesday At Eberhard's

The Columbia Lions held their first monthly meeting Tuesday at Eberhard's Restaurant. Herbert Schueler chaired the 1966 Strassenfest and thanked the club for past support while asking continued help. Ken Lowery announced his District Governor candidacy and invited attendance at the Salem Illinois convention in April. Edward Gotway of Parks College spoke on computer history and its industry and education roles.

The Columbia Khoury League will meet Tuesday March 15 at 7 30 p.m. at City Hall. Anyone interested in helping this summer recreational program is urged to attend.

Girl Scout Troop Visits City Council Meeting

The City Council welcomed Mrs. Gilbert Arnin and Columbia Girl Scout Troop 320 in honor of Girl Scout Week. Scouts ran the mock offices with leaders listed and Aldermen named. City reports showed February collections of 14438.45, funds on hand 94949.51, and 28543.36 pledged. Maintenance noted a completed dog pound, repaired basketball courts, and street repairs underway. A water line extension on South Columbia was discussed and Illinois Power was asked to replace a street light.

William J Curran Former Monroe County Sheriff Dies

William J. Curran 67 former Monroe County sheriff died of cancer at St Clement's Hospital Red Bud after a three week stay. Funeral Friday 10 am at St Patrick's Tipton with burial in church cemetery. Survivors include his wife Julia Ruby four daughters and five sons with several siblings and 14 grandchildren. Curran served as sheriff 1938 to 1942 and earlier was a state trooper.

Henry W. Klamp 74 of 241 N Moore St Waterloo died at St. Hospital. Services and memorial arrangements are pending on page 4.

Howlett to Address Waterloo Knights Father Son Breakfast

Michael J. Howlett state auditor of public accounts will speak at Waterloo Council No. 1334 Knights of Columbus Father and Son Breakfast on Sunday March 13 at 10 a.m. The event follows a 9 a.m. mass at SS Peter and Paul Church Waterloo. Howlett will discuss the ecumenical movement in Illinois and its relevance to youth.

Middleton outlines Columbia school building plan at Rotary

B D Middleton, superintendent of Columbia Community Unit No 4, addressed the Columbia Rotary Club on Wednesday evening. He explained proposals for the April 1 special school election and presented three building program phases with area improvements, school additions, and a six year enrollment survey. Andy Burgess led the program.

Governor Otto Kerner announces the appointments of James E. Johnson of Columbia and Ralph Jacobs of Valmeyer to the Southwestern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission. Jacobs’ term expires October 1, 1967, and Johnson’s expires October 1, 1969.

Traffic Accidents Rise in Columbia Jan Feb Totals and Injuries

Traffic accidents in Columbia for January and February totaled 10, up from eight in the prior year. Seven injuries occurred this year versus three last year. Chief James L. Juengling urges extra driving caution during school hours and bad weather as speed limits are lowered and signs installed. Police seek citizen cooperation to curb accidents.
